Thunderbird Club

I agree.. on most J basses. I actually really like the look of the black Aerodyne without the pick guard or whatever the hell that god awful chrome piece near the knobs is. And its a PJ so it doesn't sound that bad. Theres a used one for sale in my country so I might buy it and turn it into a fretless (which is something Ive wanted for a long time)

The Aerodyne is the only Jazz bodied bass I've ever liked the looks of. And the P-J pickups would appeal to me more than Jazz pickups would.

I totally follow you on the Aerodyne - Those are actually pretty nice looking, and thank God without that hideous control plate and pickguard... Also the Jazz Bass Special (which is more a P than a J) looks kinda nice without a pickguard too! :)

If I'm not playing a tbird....its this little guy....sound is pretty close....

I cheat with a Washburn AB-20, the past two shows I've used this for a 3 song arc, it's kind of fun to change basses mid set - after I'm done I usually finish out with a different 'Bird

That's different... I like it - does it have a piezo pickup under the bridge or something?

I'm seriously considering getting one of these guys:

Kind of reminds me of the newer EB bass that Gibson just discontinued. But this looks nicer and that stealth look is always a winner in my book :bassist:

Yup it does! i think the only difference i'd do is either have a white/any colour pickguard rather than black & chrome hardware (i prefer chrome over any other colour hardware).

& i'm finally caught up with this thread (for some reason i don't get notified about this thread :( ). Congrats @mrb327 on the newcomer of thunderbird family :P

That looks nice, what is it? I already know which semi acoustic bass i'm going to get

It's nice to play, short scale & the first thing i'm doing after having it in my hands, Removing the pickguard. I might swap the controls all around for either chrome domes, clear speed knobs or witch hats. I'll use the chicken head for my ripper bass build.

Also, on the subject of my thunderbird, i brought her to my practice with my pop punk band & holy crap this thing has balls. Plugged just in my M80 with a little distortion to give that edge bite: it makes the basement tremble. & the string spacing doesn't kill me so much when jumping strings to do fills well not for this music genre anyway. My MKII is on hold for the moment, i'm figuring out my university courses & such so it'll kick back into high gear during october most likely (am also revamping my batman costume for this year & comic con etc.)

?....

I'm not getting thread update notifications on a bunch of threads. When I do get updates it seems almost random.

As for cheating on the Tbird clan, when its time to flip the bird and strap something else on for a change I usually lean towards this...

...good news is at least I'm keepin the love in the Gibson family.

I took the EB-2dc out to play last night. The Dimarzio One pickup is pretty weak, relative to most of the other pickups in bass guitars I have, but it sure has a unique sound and feel. It's another one that sits really upright very well. People who think Gibson bass guitars have bad neck dive just don't strap 'em on right, in my opinion.

I was recently on a different thread where neck diving Tbirds were being bashed a bit and I mentioned that I haven't found a Gibson Tbird yet that neck dived. One of the posters (long time respected TBer so I won't mention names) noted that he's tried Tbirds in the past and found them to neck dive. Then he let slip an important litle fact, his only experience with them was in the early 1960's when they first came out, and thats when he found them to neck dive.

I had to kinda quietly laugh. A single data point from 50 years ago is what continues to perpetuate the myth at least for this individual and everyone he shares it with. It makes one wonder, if that thought process were used on Toyota, Nissan (Datsun) and Honda cars we'd all be claiming what trash the Japanese still put out.

IIRC I don't think 3" wide leather straps were very common back then, it was mostly woven cloth narrow guitar straps or leather hootenanny guitar straps. That and the heavy tuners from back then probably took their toll on the balance of many basses.

I have one as well. What strings do you use on yours?

I have some Phospher Bronze Round Wounds on my AB20, and yes Michael it uses a Piezio.

I recall that thread about neckdive - The collective TB intelligencia always amazes me, I just get tired of wasting my time them.

Somehow, this lithe, lovely woman manages to play a *big, heavy, neckdiving* Thunderbird and she's not even using a wide strap.......
I think some whiny 7ender boys need to hit the gym - says the scrawny Drag Queen
