NOW it's the real deal! Battle scar...
It is(was)an analog-b4 that term was invented-flight simulator. The student pilot sat in the cockpit with the hood closed and practiced flying by instruments w/o leaving the ground. It moved in all 3 axes(not a lot)and gave the sensation of flight. The "plane" was connected to a monitoring station by a many conductor cable that transmitted the course being"flown"to an instructor/controller who graded the performance. There was a device called a "crab"that traced the movements on a map at the instructor's desk. Chucky's pic shows the student in the trainer, but with the hood swung open. It would be closed during operation so that the student Only saw the instruments and heard the instructions through the headset. The thing directly in front of the monitor's hand is the "crab". Quite primitive, but better than risking newbies lives and destruction of real aircraft. BTW, "Link" was the name of the inventor-not like "link" is used today. Aren't you glad you asked? I usually stand on the next-to-the-high-hat side and leading my own band I stand in a more central spot. As long as you have good monitors I guess you can stand anywhere.

Yeh, there's a pic of a basic grey one in the Wiki-link. It's funny they went to the trouble to make it look like an amusement park ride adding colourful paint and wings etc.
MONITORS? We don't need no stinking monitors.(we use a JBL EON One, which is behind us-PA and monitor all in one)

I've got myself (headstock) caught up in her skirt once, she wasn't pleased with me, it was in a pub so it went unnoticed thankfully
