Thunderbird Club

Got myself a dean metalman flying V bass case for a few bucks (65€) to mod for my RD, maybe also interesting for Explorer or NR Bird Players? Dat Case is huuuuuuge

Step 1: rip that V shaped foam out
Next Step: cut foam to accept RD Bass

That foam may react with the basses finish over time.I'd cover the foam with some plush fabric.

Good afternoon TBers, I have been keeping an eye out for a 5 string Thunderbird, either Gibson or Epiphone for some time. I have seen a few Epiphones come and go on the GC website but have not purchased one yet. I came across an Epiphone listed as "nos". I admit to not having been familiar with the term, and am wondering if this is a new instrument that was warehoused for some number of years, which seems very curious, or one made from existing parts years later? Or does it have some other meaning? Has anyone purchased an "nos" bass? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey there, and thx. Just checked and so far they're a bit pricey for me, but some of them sure look nice. The neck dive on a 5 isn't too bad?

I made this extension for a recent SG/EB short scale to standard scale conversion and it solved the neck-dive issue. Same concept/design would work on a T-bird. Just need to get the strap-peg close to the 12th fret. You could get fancier but this very basic design is stable, minimal and it works.

Nicely piece of machined aluminum - Looks like it was a production model, and not homemade. :)

I got it from Musikhaus Brillon here in Germany for 65€. The case is about 1,40 x 0,45 m so it's about 55 inches Loooooong

That's great. Any chance you know if it's made in China? I ordered the epi case from thomann and it had a real bad solvent smell. After remodeling it even skin peeled off my fingers..

Hope this one's better.

btw did they charge "Sperrgutzuschlag"? Don't wanna pay 90€ shipping from wherever they are in Germany to Vienna..

Yesterday, the RP200 came in and while my 14 year old didn't have time to play with it, football game and homework after, I did! Holy smokes is that fun to mess around with! Thanks for the recommendations guys as I'm sure this'll get plenty of use. It was a blast running though some of my favorite bass lines while cycling through the effects. Fun fun fun!

BTW, I think today will be a NBD for me as my Studio V should be delivered. So I'll post up some pics tonight! :)

Nice!

Enjoyed your music, best of luck to you and your band!
Great shot too!

Just thought I would share a few things: 1) TGIF-tbird action shot - here's to all the gigging thunderbirds this weekend! 2) My band's debut album will be out in a week, so here is a tune from the record that I thought you guys might enjoy, featuring the thunderbird pictured below.

Thanks much Nocturnal and Haji for the information. I admit I was not familiar with the term. I am still intrigued, and a little skeptical, by the idea of an NOS 5 string Epi from 2009.
I wouldn't be. That's likely going to be a really good deal for a bass that's been in a warehouse somewhere. Chances are the box is dusty. If it has been a demo or display, then it's not NOS. That's worth checking before pulling the trigger. It's also worth asking where it has been stored. Out in the rain is bad, of course, but I wouldn't be too concerned about climate control issues, because that's not all that different from shipping across country. Plus, the whole thing has had a chance to settle in and should be reasonably stable once you get it adjusted to your liking. My take is that guitar and bass necks move around quite a bit for the first two or three years, then they move less and less over time. Assume you are going to have some adjustment and setup to do, and also assume that you may have to take your time doing it so you don't overdo it too fast. Once you get it adjusted, it ought to stay put pretty well.

Thanks! I saw a pic of something like it made by a local guitar repair shop on line and called to ask about it. It was a one-off (for a vintage Dano guitar) and they offered to make me one but it would have been pricey (as in, custom) so being 'at one' with that term, I made my own like it. I don't experience neck-dive issues with my T-birds, but went ahead and made a template for one based on the same goal - peg at 12th fret, about 3" side-to-side from the neck (standard upper horn dimensions) This is shown on my Fenderbird so applicable to bolt on necks primarily. This extension would help in my case by centering the bass more - it tends to be a bit of a reach to first position because the neck didn't incorporate a ramp for the unaltered neck pocket.

the SG/EB extension is about 7" on the long side to the plate, and the T-bird extension is about 5.5" on the long side from the plate
