Thunderbird Club

Sure, from a post I made earlier in this thread...

.....Not a thunderbird or even a Fenderbird, but it's a very rare Rainsong graphite A/E bass custom made for John Entwistle. In talking with Rainsong they estimate they only made 4 or 5 total Acoustic Electric basses, one of them was customized to John's specifications and he took delivery of it in 1997. Here's a pic of him playing it outside the House of Blues in Los Angeles...

I bought it from Jimmy Haslip about 10 years ago, he got it from John. Here's some current pics of it (ignore the crazy reflections on the frontal shot)...

The graphite weave is striking...

Of course John had great taste in inlay selections...

It really is a phenominal sounding and playing bass and projects much better than any A/E bass I've heard. I don't currently have a recording of John playing the bass but Dean Felber from Hootie and the Blowfish had one of the very few other Rainsong basses made and used it on an MTV Unplugged video, enjoy...

WOW! What a sound! I'd love for my little ole Ibanez 0607181547-00.jpg to sound that good. And yours is stunning.drool

Lol. I’ve had to listen to the same two skrillex cds 7 times each, once, on one of my major driving marathons.

ANYTHING less and I’d have been asleep.

My record is Vancouver to thunder bay straight driving non stop. Google says 3000 kms (1877miles) 30 hours. It took me closer to 45 hours and I was up for 48. Kind of confusing because the time zones keep changing too. It was sport driving...just curious to know how far I could push myself. I left Vancouver around noon or just before and stopped driving around 10 pm next night

I know it’s terribly dangerous and stupid...

I had dubstep, coffee, red bull, cold air and regular water splashed in my face every chance I got...you have to drive minimum 120kmh just to stay awake...speed limit will put you to sleep too.

I don’t do drugs so that’s a major feat. I’m sure truckers on drugs can do the whole country no problem with fudged books.

I’m retired from such stupid driving sports now. It feels like torture. Any time you drive tired for months afterwards you have flashbacks to that Ill feeling.

Is that a 32” scale? I tried one and was quite taken with it. Look and feel anyway. I passed on it to go for a JCB... missed that as well.

Just as well, it meant I had the money when the Gibby T’Bird came up.

I drove 18 wheelers for 23 years-never took any dope except Jolt Cola-but 10+ hours will have you seeing things that aren't there.

It says it's 30.3" but it takes medium scale tape wounds(D'Addario). I put a set of SS tapes on it and the silks overhung the nut on E and G. SS Chromes worked OK but I wanted tapes and I just got a set over Christmas.:D Sounds Very UB-y. The body on the Ibby is a little smaller than the JCB(which wasn't available anyway). It's quite comfortable to play standing or propped on a stool.

Definitely. Worse in a big truck because you’re speed is steady and slower. Can’t be stopping all the time to stand in the cold in a T-shirt in the middle of nowhere or while you pump gas or splash water in your face. I remember having to constantly shake my head readjust my focus at times.

Without company it’s much harder too. After awhile music actually makes you sleepy.

What’s the longest you drove straight?

About 12 hours(b4 they changed the hours of service law). One of my best trips was Miami to Jacksonville, non-stop, 5 1/2 hours, 360 +/- miles. In this:IMG_20180805_0001.jpg My truck, company wagon. <ADDENDUM>I had AM/FM/Cassette, CB, 'Bird dog' and Scanner tuned to FHP and all the Counties I ran through.

Nice truck. If I was single I’d love to own my own truck and just drive. My back and legs don’t do too well with all the driving I’ve done. Bad posture leads to more pain which leads to worse posture. Some of those trucks are beautiful and comfortable. The US has more lenient laws on width and length so some guys have super trucks with huge cabs and decks.

Yeah, mine had a 36" "shack". I could sleep better in the sleeper than I could at home. She was 225" WB on Air Ride; rode better than any car I've owned. Just proving I've always been outside the norm, she's a Freightliner- not a Pete or KW-just like I play a TBird, not a FSO.:smug:

That’d be nice. I hear it’s good money for Canadians and easier on your truck if you can drive the US in the winter months... Canada alone is supposed to be harder on the trucks and not as much money. Maintenance on your own truck can be heavy though. Probably better if you don’t drive a Pete. They’re beautiful though. Like Harleys. Just not perfect.

My driving career was all FL and GA(no snow/ice). It's a good life if you get the right gig[kinda like music]. I was home every weekend, sometimes during the week for a day. 90+% was night driving-much preferred. Petes and KWs are both built by Paccar. They aren't much different from each other(unless you talk to their owners), esp. similarly equipped, i.e. engines, transmissions, rears, etc. I'm glad I'm out of it now with fuel prices being double + what they were when I hung it up. I sold mine in 92 and went to driving Company trucks-less headaches. Still miss it occasionally(sigh).

I so want a NR! Love your collection. Never tried one but they look like they just hang so naturally. Now that Gibby is under new management, I'll give them or Eppi one more year to come out with a NR reissue. If nothing happens by then, it's off to the used market for a vintage one, or possibly a custom build from Carlo.
Or both!

I never even knew what NR was for the longest time...I’m not attracted to them but like you said I’m sure they hang nice. I also dislike dot inlays. Doesn’t do enough for the fretboard...
Were there ever any inlays besides dots on stock Gibson TBs? Blackbird has iron crosses obviously but anything else?
Studios had plain fretboards
