What is with the screws on the bridge pickup? That can't be stock...

Already has a Hipshot bridge. That would save me $120. With a discount like that, I would be crazy to pass on it...
those screws come loose frequently, the pickup then comes up closer to the strings and it starts sounding goosey....schmoe prolly got tired of that and replaced with bigger screws that won't allow for the original screw anymore..

Looks like the previous owner flipped the threepoint out for a hipshot. Might or might not be an improvement depending on what camp you're in, but it's no longer stock and the price is at least $500 higher than the typical going rate for a stock 2013 goldy. Does look like it's in nice shape though.

FYI, that Anniversary bass, now in Italy, looks very much like the exact same one that was being offered by a private vendor, (Denis, from Barcelona, Spain), around May last year. (It had the Hipshot bridge, and also the extra strap button on the top horn. The addition of the button to the top horn is what makes me think it is the same bass.) It was overpriced when it was being sold back then, but the price has increased now that it appears to be being sold by a shop rather than a private vendor.

As of this afternoon I have joined the Thunderbird fold.
My first Thunderbird - My first Epiphone actually, and it's a beauty. Not a mark on it and plays really well.
I am staggered how well this plays seated. Forearm nestled into the upper bout as natural as. Not a hint of neck dive or even a heavy feel.
I just need to work out weather to keep it and add a Babicz bridge and a bit of pot tweeking, or to start looking for a Pro.

Greg, I'd like to welcome you to the Thunderbird Club, I always enjoy reading about how people come find our favorite basses. I think you should just enjoy that bass as it is, for what it is, no fancy parts are needed, just play it! There's lot's of Commonwealth folks here and at least one of your countrymen as well. I'll be bringing the list forward momentarily with you added :bassist:

Welcome Nunovsky, that's a beautiful Vintage Pro that you have, what a splash Epiphone has made with this great edition of the iconic Thunderbird! The growl heard around the world! As always, we welcome questions and don't encourage the search function! Pictures and video as well as good humor are welcome too!

Welcome Greginperth (#751) and Nunovsky (752) to our club, thank you for sharing your pictures with us, and please feel free to join in the ongoing conversation here.

Good eye!

#HowIStarted
I played guitar off and on for decades. rarely could I get past so-so unless I practiced 3-4 hours a day for weeks on end. I haven't had time for that since I was 25. I did play bass on a song every blue moon, faking my way through. I'd also been playing hand percussion on every surface available off and on.
A few years ago, our drummer at church left, so I started playing djembe. A couple of years later, we had three drummers and our bass player left. I'd been looking for an excuse to get a bass, so I offered to learn (they knew I played guitar). When they said yes, I skipped on over to Guitar Center. I was looking at Ibanez and Yamaha basses when I saw... an Epi Thunderbird IV. I immediately flashed back to Lynyrd Skynyrd opening for the Who in 1973. Leon Wilkeson and John Entwhistle both had Thunderbirds that night. Between the look and the sound, I fell in love. And here was a Thunderbird, staring me in the face.
I pulled it down and plugged it in. Despite not really knowing what I was doing, bass-wise, it was suddenly a half hour later and I had a stupid grin on my face. The salesman started toward the back to get a brand new one, but I wanted that one. "I can't discount it because we have plenty in the back." I didn't care. That bird and I had claimed each other.
I've made the mistake of selling or giving away a lot of firsts over the years. That won't be happening with this one.

I know I know. I can’t help it. The will to apathy drives me crazy. I’m obsessive about things as is anyone whose every changed anything. I can be lazy and not get around to fixing things but I’d never argue that it doesn’t make a difference. Go tell that to PRS or Fender or Gibson.

He does kind of sound like a cult leader for global guitar tone fanatics but come on he has some credibility.... even though it will never see the light of day. Lol

I could simplify my point for sure. You can argue with PRS if you like but he makes one of the greatest guitars in the world and it’s sure not because he thinks that vinyl tape nut slot shims don’t make a negative difference. Everything makes a difference. I understand bass strings have more mass and minimize the impact of such impedance to tone.

~Inserts face at you too.~ lol

I think he sounds very factual/straight forward. His point about pu's being microphones was an interesting analogy. Pick-ups are a major part of the sound of an instrument but the foundational vehicle (the instrument itself) that gets filtered through them is also affecting the sonic outcome. How could it not? Nay-sayers can scoff at tone-wood and bridge dynamics (and nuts) but I also believe that if all parts are considered with the goal of optimal sound once collected and assembled - you will create a great sounding instrument. Everything does make a difference.

I always forget to quote people and I don’t know how to insert quote from an edit.

He has a bunch of other videos he did...one was even on Ted talks.

On this topic and within T-bird territory.., here's an example of collecting a bunch of particulars resulting in a great sounding bass. My Teiscobird, which I posted here at one point, has a mahogany body made in 1966 (Teisco Del Rey), a maple/rosewood Epi Goth neck (made within the last 8-10 years), a RI Guild Darkstar single-coil pu (2016), a Hipshot KA bridge, basic tuners, passive V/T 500k pots, and nickel RW strings. Nut is what came on the Goth neck.

I recorded last Sunday using it on this song. (original by our guitarist) No effects - d.i. straight to the board. Before the day of recording I tried a number of my basses at home to see which sounded best for the session. The Teiscobird won out.

Nice I believe in the value of one pick up. Less magnetic pull on the strings.

I got an error message for that audio though

I’m such a sucker for gold....if it was around here I’d probably do it.

Maybe it’s just me I can’t play the audio

Greg, I'd like to welcome you to the Thunderbird Club, I always enjoy reading about how people come find our favorite basses. I think you should just enjoy that bass as it is, for what it is, no fancy parts are needed, just play it! There's lot's of Commonwealth folks here and at least one of your countrymen as well. I'll be bringing the list forward momentarily with you added :bassist:
did we do away with our ritualistic initiations?? It was so fun making people do strange and tasteless things :hyper::roflmao:

i ahree whole heartedly! Everything does make a difference. sometimes small thing wont make a to. of difference but every part does have some nuance to the sound.
