Thunderbird Club

Nearly NBD!!!

It's not a Thunderbird this time, though... I just bought this Harley Benton HB-60 shortscale hollowbody today...

It was for sale way out of town, but I had a local friend of mine to pick it up for me - Will probably get it sometime next week... :)

I'm sorry all. I must renounce my number. I returned my Epi Pro and cancelled my order for the Epi Classic.....I think I just am into a brighter / snappier sound. and with my short arms/fingers, I found it hard to play chords down by the end of the neck.. I hope we cross paths again some day!

You're a very supportive group! Thanks!

So I did it... I got the bass. Fun little GAS story to go with it...

A bunch of posts before this one (pages and pages back) I said "I'm back" because I had just picked up a 2015 Tbird from a Guitar Center for the (at the time) ridiculously low price of $1499. Within a few days I had buyers remorse and returned it for a full refund (I then bought a fretless Jaco Jazz with the money and was left with about $200 on top - a steal, really on that Jaco). But, alas, I was once again "birdless."

When I posted the other day about the $999 price I saw at my Guitar Center, it seemed like fate, because the bass I returned was now on the wall for $500 less. Once the pining started in overdrive, I started thinking, "$1000 is a good deal, I should just do it. I'll slap it on the old GC credit card, they have special 0% financing on Gibson stuff now. Another bass never hurt anyone." But then I started thinking about trying to explain that to my wife and myself when the bill came in. So I did some soul searching and decided I wouldn't do it. What I would do, though, is trade in the Jazz bass I'm not playing. I have a US Geddy (which is the best Jazz bass I've ever owned, and I've owned everything from MIMs to Custom Shops) so the 2003 Trans Orange I recently took as part of a trade was last in/first out. Keeping the Geddy for life - I think. (Just to illustrate my disease, I traded the Jaco I bought with the T-bird cash - which came from a sale of a Big Al Bass - for that Orange bass and a Steinberger Synapse - because, Steinberger, 80s kid ad Geddy Lee).

I took the Jazz into Guitar Center today and asked, "Do I get the 10% off if I do a trade?" They said, "no, it's on clearance." I knew they would. But I tried. They looked up my Jazz and they claim they will sell it for $950 (because they are Guitar Center and their used gear is always over by about 15% going rate or more) and they would give me $570. They eventually came up to $600 after some negotiating. This is where the story gets fun...

I agreed (because Thunderbird!) and the way I figured it, with the $200 I made on the Jaco buy and the break even-ish on the Jaco trade, I am walking out of there almost even if not a little light but with a brand new T-bird. Get this, though: The kid behind the counter was great! He was able to give me 10% off the CASE because that's not clearance and GC has unique item numbers on both. So, the walk out the door price (before tax) for a brand new Thunderbird (that I had bought and returned at $1499) was $977. That's LESS THAN HALF of what they sold for when they came out less than 12 months ago at (the not practical) price of $2209. And, if you are not part of the bass playing community, or have access to the web, or live in a cave, Sweetwater, Musicians Friend and even Guitar Center Online will still sell it to you at $2209.

BUT!!!

Wait for it...

The kid cleans it up, we look over the paint for inconsistencies (as you must with Gibbies) and it's nearly perfect. They go to the back to the store room to get the case, bring it out open it up to put my bass in. When they open it what do they find? The one I brought back a few weeks ago! So they had TWO clearance thunderbirds in stock and didn't even realize it!

Long and the short: if this story inspired you to get a brand new Gibson 2015 American T-bird, I know where you can get one in NJ for $977.

I will post pix later. When I get home.

Still giddy...

Congrats! I love mine so much I' m thinking it needs an Alpine white sibling.

Hey thunderbird lovers I have a question or two for you guys. Now before I ask this you can remove me from the list because my t-bird has flown away. I was wondering if the things I didn't like were a problem with my version of the epi bird or that's just how it is.

After my honeymoon phase with the bird (and even when I got it) it felt like a cheaper bass. It's hard to really explain but it felt too light and it seemed hallow. My other basses especially my Warwicks and Ltd just feel like a solid piece of wood where as with the epiphone it really did feel cheap. At first I was like it's a 170 dollar bass it's not gonna be great but even my Rondo music 6 String feels like a solid bass and I got it for the same price.
The other thing that got me was how weak the pickups sounded. When I got my new amp head it really didn't stack up against my other basses. That's after 3 new sets of strings and hours of playing with my EQ just to get a sound I like. I don't know the year mine was made but I wanted to know if I may be just got a lemon or that's how bit is. Maybe if anyone understands what I'm talking about does the Epiphone tbird pro feel any different or even the Gibsons. I really like the look of the basses i just couldn't get over how it felt. Any opinions or though would be great thank you
Not sure if this helps but I have both a Warwick Thumb and a Gibson Tbird. The Wick is an active bass so I plug it into the active pad input on my amp. The Tbird is passive so it plugs into the passive input on the amp. When I do this both basses are relatively similar in volume (actually the bird is a bit higher but not much). If I plug the Wick into the passive amp port it is in fact much louder than the Bird. Not sure what amp you have but if you haven't already tried this, give it a try.

The only other thing I can think of would be to raise your Tbird pickups closer to the strings. That will also increase volume to a degree.

What is it about this T-bird slung low that compels me to use a pick? I mostly play finger style - not out of snobbiness ;) but out of my 30 years of playing. I occasionally use a pick but at rehearsal tonight I found myself using a pick a lot... A LOT. Maybe T-bird + 90s alt hard rock = pick?
Always like an excuse to post a pic of my favorite TBird player...

On my amp I only have the single input but It has a button for active and passive and I tried it on both and it seemed weird. And with the pickups I did have them as high as they could go, I actually had to put in business cards under them because with the stock foam it wouldn't go as high as I'd like them to be. I could just need a taste of the Gibson pickups I don't know yet.

So i just got back from my gig in Huntingdon, qc with my pop punk band. Used the bird tonight & it sounded sick!! Killer bass, awesome highs (not changing those pickups ever!!)

I played & watched the other bands as the joker

& now in the following weeks, my beloved bird will be broken in pieces for a good clean up & for me to give it new life. As a phoenix gets old & dies, a new one rises from the ashes. Take a good look, cause it probably won't look the same as it is now.

That does indeed seem weird on the active/passive switch. It should make a noticible difference in volume.
Between dropping my bridge and raising my pickups I can get the string to PU gap to nearly zero. I normally start at about a 2mm gap and adjust the pickups up or down from there to fine tune volume and saturation. You can kind of see how close they are here...

Shame you had to give up on the Thunderbirds...

Hopefully you'll return again some day in the future... ;)

I think a sideways picture probably would have been better - it's a bit hard to tell seeing it from above... ;)

Yeah, I agree.
Unfortunately I didn't have a great detail pic and was being too lazy to go take a fresh one and down load it to photobucket and then link it to TB. But if you look real hard you can kind of tell that the strings aren't much further off the pickups than they are the frets. I know its less than 2mm and probably close to a 1 or 1.5 mm gap. Maybe I'll post one tomorrow that clearly shows the pickup, string and bridge height.

Since a lot of your sound comes from your playing style and settings heres a bit more info that might help Mini.
I play finger style with a very low action and a medium heavy hand and consequently like my basses deep and dark with plenty of low end push and a bit of saturation. I have a tendency to play over the neck pickup with my tone control set on 75% bass and my neck PU nearly full on with bridge PU dialed up just enough to add the necessary definition and bite required for a given song. The Gibson Tbird delivers in spades, I have not tried the Epi but just assumed it would be about the same beast.

I'm still gonna hold for a hagstrom viking bass in white. i love the tones it gives, but am curious on your "review" about this one once you get it :D

So i think i've figured out what my Goth is going to go through in the future

It's going to be sanded down (except for the back of the neck). All old pickugard & control holes filled + the extra ding from the broken wing. Depending on how the wood looks underneath, i might go for a stain burst but having the back & sides in black. The headstock face will be redone as well going for the same look to bring out the black tuning keys. & everything is going to be varnish in semi gloss. I'm also going to plug & redrill the two larger bridge post holes so that they are snug inside.

& the neck will have a nut width of 1.65" .10 over 1.5 like most of my basses, but less than it's current state now (which is very wide to my personal taste). So removing frets, shaping to new width, filling & cutting a new nut & then paint touch up on the sides as well as a bit of profiling.

So i've decided to make the nut width like a precision bass. I will post pictures once i get enough work done today. The only new parts i'm getting for this bass are gotoh tuners in black chrome, a black tube output jack & a new white nut blank.

Stay tuned for more action packed bird views

So am I... ;)

Love the looks of it, and judging from these three videos I guess the sound ain't half bad either... :)

I particularly like the sound of it played with a pick...

I've checked videos, but honestly for me it's not enough cause they don't talk about it. I wanna hear whats good about it, whats bad & can be imporved if the bad things can be improved. But yes I agree full/semi hollowbody with pick, is fantastic.

I'm mostly focused on my Goth series Punk bird But i've also drilled the jack output hole for MKII. Since im replacing the goths' chrome jack with a black one. I'm currently marking the necks new width & then i'll be shaving it down.

New development: I'm making the fretboard width 1.625 or 1 5/8" if you will, not the string spacing(as for that would be a tad wider than what it currently is) . It's fantastic i'm not taking off much at the top but the bottom seems to be getting a bit more bitten off :P

Ok you asked for it. Here's pictures of my bird held in playing position that give a good feel for my setup...
Dime pinned under E string at 12th fret with no strings depressed...

Leading edge (or PU side) of bridge at about 1/4" off body...

E string depressed at fret closest to neck PU does not allow a dime to slide underneath neck PU...

Again, all these pictures were taken with the bass held in playing position (not laying flat on a table).
