Really? I always thought he overplayed but that he did it just to keep himself from being bored. Compared to JPJ, easily twice as many notes and only half as good to my ears. RIP, JAE and long live, JPJ!
JPJ was my idea of organic and bluesy. Still is... JAE was more pop-phenom and showy. Both are fine, but I relate much more to organic and bluesy. JPJ was my mentor when I started playing. Still my musical Sifu, as it were.

I'd already been playing for a while before my instructor "made" me learn some Led Zep stuff. JPJ is WAY overlooked as the important part of Zep.
I learned to like Led at an early age. JPJ is without doubt the single biggest reason I picked up bass. The strongest musician in the band, IMO

They wouldn't have been anywhere near what they became without him, JPJ was definitely the best musician in the band, they were brilliant in the studio. - Sorry tho, they were terrible live, I saw them in '75 for Houses of the Holy tour and they were not a good show, way too much wanking, even if it was in style at the time.
Production of the recordings /albums was ambitious and creative, and yeah they had Paul-Jones in the studio, with his arranging chops... It was a good thing he went and called Jimmy Page when he heard he was forming a band. And a damn shame Page's ego was so mis-shapen that he forgot Jone's phone # when talk of a reunion was abuzz. Oops.
I'd agree they could be terrible but on the other hand they could be awesome as well! I collected every live bootleg I could get my hands on during the 80's and 90's and when they were on they were ON! Of course no one would bother producing a bootleg of a crap show so the live ones I've listened to were slanted to the good-great side of the live performance spectrum. Their live Train Kept-A-Rollin' is just amazing.
The version from their 1980 European Tour is one of the bootlegs I own and it was a double CD. Here's a YouTube link for that recording. Very raw and incredible energy!

They're #1 and #2 bass heroes for me so I'd even go d'accord. Just think Entwistle had to play lot's of notes with lots of mids, because their music made it necessary. I think The Who would've sucked with a JPJ kinda bass player.
The two bands just did such different rock and roll. Zeppelin was rawer while The Who loved to do more flowery tunes. Zep would never do a song like, Substitute and the Who would never do, Whole Lotta Love. Such different bands, IMO.

I listen to EVERYTHING. I can even suffer through country now as I mellow into the waning years of middle-age. Love Nirvana, Pearl Jam, the Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Temple of the Dogs, etc. A great time for new music for sure.
Okay, what counts as "middle age"? My wife and I were talking about this last night. Technically, my life expectancy is about 80 - I'm 39 now, so I'm middle aged?
