Thunderbird Club

Don't really think open mics at obscure suburban pubs will do much of anything for us, except annoy people with louder than expected noise. Our guitarist has volunteered to sing if necessary but I want her to concentrate on making noise.

Drummer thinks our French candidate won't really want to be in the band because she's French and has a good music CV, therefore can pick and choose. We have a Spanish guitarist, a 'NZ R&R hall of fame' bass player ... why would she be any different? I understand her frustration ... she just needs to chill for a few days and see how the auditions go.
The French singer would be in like Flynn because she is French. Not out. If she was American, well

Not saying it’s the best way, but I’ve used a razor blade to shave off the silks in a pinch

I started trying to do that, but realized I was going to leave unsilked metal wrap exposed. I stopped cutting (yay!) and nail polished the remaining silk. For now I have ran nuts from 3/16" (I think) screws down the strings for spacers. Not pretty, but you have to be up close to see it.

There's the "mod bar" that solves that problem....
GIBSON® EPIPHONE® BASS BRIDGE 3-POINT (MOD-BAR!) | eBay

Or you could install a hard tail if you don't mind drilling into your bass.

Long term I'll get another bridge (or *possibly* a mod bar if I can get a black one). It's the basic Epi IV; I have no problems drilling it. If the Bad bridge came in black, I'd have installed it months ago.

I never really noticed, but this bridge is slightly off toward the E side as well. Is this common with Epis?

Trying to put EB Cobalt flats on my Epi IV with the stock three-point. The E string silk goes way up onto the bridge saddle. It looked like a ball end on it *might* be enough, but the ball end won't fit over the %^& silk. What's the best way to deal with this? Thanks!

I guess I could stick a washer or three down there. Ugly.
Put on

I now have EB Cobalt Flats on both Epi basses.

I think once I get the neck relief right on the Pro V, they will definitely stay. (I don't have the right tool for that yet.) The action is still a bit low and clangy. But even without digging in hard, I like the sound a lot better, even through the toy amp at home (soon to have a better cab hooked up, yay!)

On the IV (the one I was fighting the silks on), I am fairly certain they'll stay. The original strings (whatever they are (red silk round wounds)) were pretty bright. The cobalts are not really dark, but are definitely not as bright. But with a bit of neck pickup and a the tone up a tad and a half, I'm really liking the sound.

The feel is interesting. I'll pay for it tomorrow, but was I was reveling in the ease with which I can slide between frets now when I want to. One session on each bass isn't much to bass (sic) anything on, but so far I'm a fan. We'll see how rehearsal goes Thursday.

Just got to load in at Knuckleheads in KC. Actually a great club at night, but on weekend days it’s just an ocean of Harley apparel and bands playing Mustang Sally and Rocky Mountain Way. So many folks hit 50 or so, then only want to hear the same music over and over for the rest of their lives. Then some of the same people lament the lack of live music. There’s actually tons of great original music out there. Just often a serious lack of support for anything original or new. And there’s tons of great, original music out there. Too bad so many assume if it ain’t their music from their era it can’t be any good
Apparently I'm an aberration; I'm constantly looking for the new. That's one thing that irritates me about the Nashville rock scene today: its either the same 4 bands playing shows together and not bringing anyone new to the bill, or they're hipsters doing this bullchit 70's bell bottom garbage with scarves and goofy flat brimmed hats and using coil cords. Coil cords make everything sound worse.

I am so down with this......

Non-bird content alert...
Someone busted the fast-lock handle on my Meinl djembe stand. I have the part number, but nowhere to order it. I've contacted Meinl, but wondered if anyone could recommend a parts place here in the states likely to have it. So far no luck locally or searching online.

Meinl fast-lock set p/n stand-14 if anyone cares
Maybe Fork's Drum Closet in Nashville?

THIS THIS THIS!!!

I get so tired of the same old, "They call this crap music? There's no real music today." And I hear it from people as young as 30. And I always remind these people that it's the same BS their parents said about their music. There's good music now just like there was then. But just like then, you have to be open minded, and you might have to look for it. But it's definitely there.
The great thing about having a musician son is that he tells me about great music I never would have heard otherwise. Well, one great thing. There are lots of great things..

My first 'Bird was an Epi that was off to the G side by a bit. Not much to affect playing, but enough for me to notice. The bolt on Epi I have now is more even.

It’s one of the benefits of hanging out with all ages. Our dozens of kids of the heart turn is onto all sorts of cool music, books, art, etc.

Haha! I know all too well of which you speak :)
