It sounds like you are set on steel. I recently did a bit of experimenting with strings (look a few pages back). The long and short is that with steels, I found ProSteels to be quite scooped. I rather liked the RS66s but I think that I am more inclined to use nickels.

Interesting. Scooped isn't an attribute that appeals to me, but the added brightness does. I like the feel of nickles, but don’t mind the dryness of the steels, as long as I can get the sound I want.

I played R66s for a very long time. I actually started with those back in the late 70s. But in the last couple years I’ve tried them a few times, and always disappointed with them.

I don’t know if it’s the relatively large number of good choices available today, or they just lost their recipe, but I’ve been unlucky with the R66s.

I've tried the Dunlop SS Super Brights, and loved them till i killed em. I'm generally a flat's man, so i typically use the Cobalt flats on my Birds. So i can't really speak about rounds in general. But i bet others will chime in on the rounds game cause we sure have a lot of round lovers here. :)

Lol, I am notoriously hard on basses and strings. Call it bad/improper technique, but I just seem to bash on them. I’m hoping the SS Dunlops last at least as long as the nickles.

What did I miss, what offended you, @PillO ? :roflmao:

Someone here suggested that I try steel Lowriders and I didn't get that far. I may have a go with nickel Lowriders.

Not you. It was @JJR58 suggesting that some of us are "round"

[edit] the skinny bastard.

I've mentioned this before, but I've been very happy with SIT Power Steels. They also make Powerwound, which are nickel. And some other varieties. I hear from people who tend to kill strings quickly that they last quite a while. I can get a few months out of Rotosounds, so I can't really speak for general longevity.

Cool. I hadn’t considered SIT. I’m not married to Dunlop, but when I find something that works for me, I kinda settle in. I’ll look into the SITs if these new SS don’t work out.

also keep in mind some rounds do a tone 360 as they age where others don't...they just become more mellow..

Very true. EB Super Slinky’s were like that for me. Died in their sleep one night.

I’ve been pretty happy with the Dunlops. They seem to mellow, to a point, and hold that. Even during the “mellow” phase, I can still dig in to get the edge I want. I’m hoping their SS do the same, but I’m open to try others.

I think my ears have changed too, so I don’t rule out anything, unless the results of due diligence, steer me away. Basically after talking to you folks.

That's the very thing i liked about them as well. But my body chemistry and rounds are a match made in hell.

Sorry for the repost. Bringing this one back to the daylight, hoping someone is familiar with the designation:

Invalid Link Removed

Any way to tell what's up with this one? What does Level 2 signify? It's a pretty good discount off a (presumably) clean one.

When I click on the link I'm looking at a new one for 699.00, so I'm not catching it.

Ride 'em!

Yep, you are right. Someone must have grabbed it. Oh well.

I'm closing in on ordering one, most likely next week.

FWIW I think you'd probably rather have a new, perfect one anyway, and, of course we're only too happy to help you spend your money.
