Thunderbird Club

Any of you sages know what the finish is on the Epi Pro IV? I have a vision in mind for a mod... I am liking the sound I've been getting, so for the moment I'm leaving off with the Nordstrand idea I was entertaining, but I want to refinish mine and put a brass pg on it at some point. I'm wondering what a full-on refin might involve as concerns stripping of the old finish...
I'm pretty sure the finish on the fretless 'Bird (Pro IV originally) is poly thick enough that you could tow it behind an oil tanker all the way to Japan and nothing would happen to the wood. It's a vintage burst finish, or whatever they call the darker but not black finish. The light colored oil finish is a completely different animal as far as I can tell.

Found one!
Thunderbird Club

And for reference, I like war club necks!
You would think with repetitive stress/carpet tunnel the smaller necks would work better, but have found that not to be the case.

The SG works great, as do P necks at 1.625. The Lowe neck is all of that, full C profile.

Like I said, I like curvy, round, thick behinds
It's like synching up with the bounciest butt in the venue. Sometimes round is really good!

How rare are these cream birds?
They made fewer than 140 of the whites in 77-78, they've really yellowed over the years. I've owned two of them, bought the first one sold in Hollywood CA in '77. Traded it five years later for a '77 Sting Ray I still have. Bought the current one from the original owner about 5 years ago.

IMO Bicentennials are inferior to original 60s Reverses. If you own both you know why.

A few of the reasons: lighter, better balanced, pickups, more refined body woodworking.

Epi cases.

I'm not close to owning either. :(

How come the older bird stayed white? The creamish tone just fits even if unintentional.

Yeah, I though 60 would work.
Not sure how this it is on the Epi, but one peek in the pup or neck route should give you and idea.

How about roughing up the existing finish and spraying a poly-based paint over it? Anyone?
If like to end up with a nice darkish Mahogany, and then do the brass pg. I just don't want a mottled, spotty look to it when it's done...

I think it's time to start the bird hording process. My Pro in SB has some of the mahagony tones in its finish, but I guess you'd like a more solid tone right?

What about stripping it chemically and wood staining it? There are some awesome colours for that method out there.

E: Asking thosw NW guys: Is there still Supersonics merchandise available in Seattle?

I think that's the route I'm likely to go actually. I've got some good stripper here and I'm fairly handy with it.

I like the look of the wood alright, but the color of the bass is just so un-T-Bird-like to me. Like someone in the lab decided to try and make it look "high end" instead of Rock n roll, and I'm just not with that.

I have an idea on my head of a more classic look, which may actually be a surprise to the sensibilities of the better educated than myself... But I gotta go with it!

:roflmao: The 'Bird hoarding process seems to start as soon as a 'Bird chooses you. You don't choose to be a 'Bird person. It is bestowed by a bass.

You can get Supersonics merchandise here and there. I find it on the internet more than around Seattle. My son is fiercely loyal to the Sonics and wanted a Kevin Durant Supersonics jersey for his birthday. It was easier to find one of those than I expected.

A friend of mine was in Seattle in 2009 and they sold off the stuff like crazy and he took some cool stuff with him. Too bad I didn't know him back then.
I'm looking for a certain wool hood I couldn't find on the internet so far. Jerseys aren't my cup of Tea. My brother got me a Nowitzki jersey in Dallas and I love it but I would never wear it. It's basically a collector's item of one of my favourite players. Durant's cool, too and I really root for him, but I wish they were still the Sonics and not the Thunder. :(

My bet is, it's two different colors...

The 60's birds were in available in Polaris White, and the 70's bird in Classic White, which seems to have a slightly more creamy color tone...

Polaris White is the best white any guitar has ever been painted. When I get around to having my Gibson short scale TBird repainted it's going to be Polaris White.

Hy guys,

I'm selling my 1977 Greco TBII with hard case and Greco glove. I'm located in Australia so it's a bargain with your dollar slamming mine.

I know this isn't the right place for this but send me a PM if interested.

Hi Mikaelbass,

If I had two coins to rub together.....
- it would have been snapped up the minute you posted it.

GLWTS - unless you want to hang on until I find a winning scratchie? :)

Haha mate, it's all yours if you win the odds;) these things are getting more and more rare. I'm keeping my Gibson and selling this to contribute to my Dingwall fund. (Don't judge me, they are the best basses I've ever played. Not cooler than a Tbird....but these basses are in a different category)
