Thunderbird Club

thanks for the clarification and although true, I'm pretty certain the problem lies in the lower quality non US made 5881s...not the first time...

Gotcha. The early Fenders tended to be over-engineered, though, and you could get away with a wider variety in tube specs. And drive from the pickups. 8^)

honking DiMarzio bucker...bet this thing sounds pretty good..
Gibson Thunderbird non reverse bass 1968? (Black) project

....this one sounds and plays pretty good (Thunderbucker 66 S)

The seller and I have reached a deal on the 2018 Gibson RD I'm thinking of buying.
I'm perfectly happy with my /19 Gibson Thunderbird...last chance to help me decide to pull the trigger or pull the plug on the deal. Common sense says that I don't need it, but she's brutally beautiful...

Very cool and congratulations! Please post up some pics and your thoughts, lots of RD love here!

The rounds I'm using are Fender 7150M and the flats are D'Addario Chromes.

I was digging the bass with the rounds on, but after hearing this I just don't know what to do. With the flats you have instant old school sound.

Let me know what you think: Thunderbird Comparison

Great post, thank you, a fine service to the forum!

What do I think?
1) I can't stand what "thump" does to the clarity of the lowest notes, and your post reminds me not to consider Chromes, which I skipped over on my journey from La Bella Jamerson's to TIJFs [also skipped over Cobalts but probably won't try them either]. TIJFs stayed clear enough for me for about three months but haven't changed them yet. I don't feel smart about spending so much.
2) Hate "zing" of rounds, and any other unintended metallic noises (but I like sliding). One brand of pressurewound didn't seem smoother at all, so spent the money for TIJRounds and found: smoothness of the surface is good enough, "zing" is on the edge of tolerable, right on the edge of what I can accept. I don't have any EQ pedals and the amps I have don't have enough EQing authority; if I can arrange to kill more of the highs that I don't want, then TIJRounds could survive. But again, I don't feel good about spending so much. Only other rounds I could consider would have to have an *even finer* outer winding than those, and I don't know that such exists, or coated. Decided to skip coated and try tapes.
3) Have some La Bella Copper Whites I haven't installed yet.

EDIT: Short answer, I like your tracks with the rounds better.

Wow, I got sick of the topic a few months ago, but you asked for my opinion!
