Thunderbird Club

And she's playing it like it's not almost as big as her. Wow.

These darn klids need to get offa that lawn. And onto mine.
They need to quit practicing so much and go play in the dirt or something. I feel humiliated after seeing that. But what I lack in skill I make up for in.....I'll have to think on that.

Thank you for the helpful comments! I appreciate you and everyone taking the time to thoughtfully reply and make suggestions. I can see where a GK would be a different animal altogether. And I recall talking with Scott a over a year ago and he didn't have a high opinion of the TB+ PUPs, but we do all have different objectives. But he and I are alike in that we both want that 60s Thunderbird sound. But as I recall, he said he thought the SDs were a little too clean sounding. I'm considering the Chinabuckers. Cheap and available, unlike the 760s. But Christmas would be a good time for someone to buy me a nice set of PUPs! Any of my family here?!

I did do a YouTube of the ChinaBuckers, it's been posted - I can repost it if you like.

I can't speak for you, but for my brother and I, what we lack in talent we make up for in volume and pedals. Pedals make everything better. And loud. If you make some ears bleed, the complaints won't be that you can't play.

Had a noise session with my brother this afternoon. I managed to play for about 45 minutes (with some rests), so things are improving. I took the JC rather than the bird, as it seems to be my easiest bass from a reaching point of view.

Also did a fun experiment - play Sheryl Crow (You're My Favorite Mistake) and BTO (Takin Care of Business) in the style of Steve Harris - just gallop everything.

Pretty much my technique since I suck with a pick and like to play fast.

This is why tone is so important to me. My motto is: If you can't play good, you can at least sound good. I actually shoot for incredible not just good.

Thank you, that is a good thought. However, I'm thinking I might not favor anything that has a "modern" bent to it. But I will definitely think on that.
Keep me posted if you decide not to buy them. I was considering them for a NR build if I have to take matters into my own hands vs waiting for Eppi.

...I make up for it in weight, age and determination.

Yeah. But it sure looks nice. What are kidneys going for?
The kicker is, for a thousand or two more you can get a holy grail 1960's bird.

Just a thought: can you get far enuff away from the amp in a live setting to hear what it sounds like "out front"? I've found-playing live-that if it sounds good to me @ ~5-6', it's sounds like[word meaning not as good]to the audience.
That’s the great thing about wireless. Back in the good old days when we would play gigs, I always walked out into the pub to check the mix...and the bass tone.

By all means go ahead. I'm still mulling options--one, I hope is not needing to change the PUPs. I've got a few more string options yet. I do need to spend time fooling with the EQ. I hardly ever need to touch it, but I have yet had time to while having a brief rehearsal just prior to church to try every option.

the Duke @dukeorock had a couple of pickup videos on YT also.

I likely have seen it, but my inept searching didn't find it on YT. If you have time to repost it, I would like hear it. Thank you! I did find the one Scott did, however.

Here we are.... I get a bit chatty about the bass.

Originals broken? Not cutting it?

My Orville may not have had it's original pickups in it when I bought it - I wanted Kat's when she replaced hers with Thunderbuckers but after considering it she decided to keep them. At this point I'm likely to just put Lulls in it, they're perfect for early '60s since that's what they're patterned after.
