Thunderbird Club

Hey kids, so I'm having an existential Bird crisis here. I'm decided that my Epi Pro IV isn't REALLY a true Thunderbird in the traditional sense... you get it... and I'm looking to take some liberties.

I'm doing a brass pick guard for it, gonna treat it chemically to get a whack patina on it. I'll likely end up stripping the finish and doing something else for that, and I'm looking at putting a more trad-stylee bridge on it... like a Babicz or a Supertone. Or one of those cool Greco things!

I'm also very much considering Nordstrand Big Singles for pups. I'm not not trying to make the Pro IV into a trad Bird, just seeing the license to take a run with it.

So I'm just sharing, and leaving myself open to opinions, wisdom, criticism and perhaps some stories and/or humor...

Saw a School Of Rock kids show today. One of the bassists had an Epi Tbird. My phone was in the wife's purse, and she was in the restroom so I failed to get a pic. Still.. I wanted to let you all know of the 'in the wild' sighting.
There's a School of Rock chapter in our neighborhood, we played a gig with them last year. Pretty good organization that gives kids a place to actually do something. I think of it as not so much a real rock n roll deal, but sort of a pre-Berklee music camp... real rock n roll in my book includes a certain amount of logistical difficulty... lol

I think it is great when someone take a Bird and personalizes it to be it's own "thing". I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Like some formative time in the garage/basement/rented storage space as most of us went through? :)

The Pro versions don't use the screw ferrules that the standard ones use, do they?

I'm planning to sell the Supertone on my Goff (that's what they call it in Scotland; without the L) for some variety of high mass standard bridge.

I wish I had a plan for that billboard of a headstock on it. My signature model won't have a huge cheese knife lookin' headstock.

I've been thinking of a brass pickguard for my Epiphone, too. Thinking about going for a sort of steampunk aesthetic with it.

That was my thinking when I first got mine, and I'm still in that Groove with it. The idea has become a little more its own now, but similar concepts have survived my mental crock-pot , as it were!

Do what you gotta to make it yours!

Most have seen it before but here's my ProIV.

Bridge, tailpiece, pickups, rings, and covers from ThunderBucker Ranch. Pickguard and 'Bicentennial' decal my doing.

@Count Bassie : I have also a project with a future Pro IV...

Get a natural model, make a walnut finish, install Gibson PUs if I put black hardware or other chrome PUs (HKBuckers ?) if I put chrome hardware and white pickguard (to obtain a bicentennial 'like).
Install 2 vintage Gibson knobs for volume and 2 small knobs for tone.

I would like to do a photoshop editing ......... but the result is likely to be distressing. (Like my English ^^)

But in a less traditional note, I'd also be curious to install 2 EMG TBCS...

You do the finish too? That's very slick there man, I dig it!
Thanks! It's one of the rare trans black Pros...but I've painted my share of black basses.

Looks way cool. How do the pickup covers affect playability? I assume palm muting is a no go?

Yep, no palm muting with a bridge cover!
