Looks like you are only a few short steps from adding lighting to glow through that pick guard.

On this one, the goal was only about 'lightening' than lighting and I think it will stay that way. I did similar 'chambering' on the backside (under the same pg material) to get the weight down. Since I took that pic I removed the space between the holes. Brought it down to 9lbs/3oz. I think it was around 10lbs originally.

Not pretty ... but accomplished my goal.

Ya need to line it with foil to keep the __________* away.

Only thing I am currently tempted by is the new GK Legacy heads. My first bass sound love was an 800RB through an Ampeg cab. I do love my MB500, but....
Well, if I had an "extra" ~$3K laying around, it'd be one o' these:
1963-Fender-Bassman-004.jpg to play my 67tbird2.jpg* through like I used to in the 70's.

I like the older ones, 600B and 400B..remember them when they were in Campbell CA when I met Bob Gallien in the early 90s and even did some stuff for them....good old days..

Any idea how the new Legacy amps compare in sound to the MBs?
have not tried one...they look good on paper but if by "Legacy" they mean like the old ones...no way:rollno:...Class D/Non linear PS will (at least not in the near future) not get close to the bass response of a honking linear power supply....don't get me wrong, not hating, I mainly use Class D for it's convenience but cannot help the feeling that I'm cutting corners when I do......hauling a heavy older generation bass amp CAN be very rewarding..

@JIO @Chucky Stiletti and anyone else that might have some insight... Here's a wiring question that I've wondered about for a while:

Background - I have a Fender Tele with Humbuckers that is far far louder with the volume pots on max than any of my Gibson/Epiphone TBirds on max. The Fender uses 250K pots for Vol and tone, I have not measured the pup resistance so no idea how that compares with the TBirds. Most of my TBirds use 500K volume and tone pots and I did measure my Goth pups at 14.7 ohms which I think is considered pretty hot.

Question - what would be the impact of installing 250K volume and tone pots in a TBird? Would it increase volume? Would it increase the bottom end? Would it increase the top end? Would I need to use a different value tone cap? Heaven forbid, would it cease to sound like a TBird and suddenly sound like a Fender? Would planets collide? Or would it all just be a big waste of time?

As you noted earlier, for hum-buckers 500k pots or if V/T only, can be 500k V/250 T. Singles 250k. But, you can also use 500k in a single and it will make it a bit louder and less warm. There's more accurate adjectives to describe the differences, but using 250k or 500k will produce a different sound/output. And as also noted - bridge pu should be hotter because the string vibration is tighter there.

Better to line it with cash, would make the bass worth more...

From what I understand, using the 250K pots would reduce the top end/make it a bit darker sounding, but not change much else...

Pots: 250k vs 500k??

Post thunderbird Thursday and new bass day.
Here's the Goth accidental purchase with surprisingly few warts.
IMG_4292.JPG

Plays great, some grounding hum but not bad, much much better sounding than the new Goth I purchased three years ago (that has since gone under the knife in every conceivable way and now sounds quite nice).

The pups in this one sound very good, so no need to flip those out. The control harness is a bit of a mess and does have a bit of grounding hum, so that will be replaced. The bridge apparently popped a treble side anchor and was fixed with the wrong type of glue, so I'll have to confirm the bridge ground is still good, if so I'll put a Hipshot supertone bridge on it. Those appear to be the only fixes it needs and neither one is urgent. I'm happy with my $150 purchase.

Great price - that's how I was able to get a couple for projects... one with a HSC for not much more than that.

Pots: 250k vs 500k??

Thx. Both posts were very helpful. Since I'd like this Goth to be nice and dark and I have to tear into the control cavity anyway I might just go with straight 250K pots on both volumes and tone. Sounds like it might not gain a lot or any real volume increase but that's ok, I'll give it a try (if I don't like it it's an easy flip back to 500s.

So if the bridge pickup measures about the same, or slightly less than, the neck pickup, that would be not good?

...now that I think about it wasn't one of her pups relatively free of epoxy on the top and the other one wasn't? If so, you might have hit the nail on the head - the pup with more exposed blades might be interacting with the can differently than the other pup that is thoroughly encased in epoxy.

Definitely a difference there...

I think I posted here that I bought an Epi EB-0 at what I consider a good price ($165). Cosmetically, almost perfect. However, Hipshot on its way. Also, a custom TRC to replace the one that wasn't there. Still gonna be less than a new one which would prolly need a Hipshot too.
