Thunderbird Club

Cath and I spent the week on Seneca Lake in a vintage 1920s cottage. We spent most of our time hiking and enjoying the fall foliage. I did pick up a pre WWII piece of folk art a representation of the Spirit of St. Louis, it was made with lots of love and attention to detail. Aside from Tbirds this is the kind of stuff that gets me excited. View attachment 4019420 View attachment 4019421 View attachment 4019422 View attachment 4019424
Nice! Glad you had a nice week.

Donnervogel Donnerstag, my Autumnal Bird.

I don't play this Bird, or any of them enough, two days off every week is just not sufficient time to enjoy them

I seem to notice a trend. Every time you post a pic of one of your Thunderbirds....I want it! You have some really nice basses! I'm glad they're at a worthy home.

Played another Epiphone Vintage Pro today. Still can't get over how comfortable the neck was, the rolled fretboard is very nice, and the tone was incredible...top pickup, bottom pickup, both pickups, no matter how I adjusted the tone control it sounded amazing.
I know why people buy Gibsons, but I can't understand why anyone would prefer a new one over the VP.
Gibson's are simply made better and are high quality. VP's simply sound better, but are not low quality by any means. (Yes, I have both, and the gold standard 60s version.)

I don't believe Gibsons are made better or have inherently better quality, in fact I believe the opposite.

I understand. I can only speak from personal experience with the ones I own. My 06 feels and plays like my '64. Maybe I got a great one. It just feels great. No rough edges, hardware is smooth. Light and just feels like the '64. I prefer lacquer as well on the Gibson. As much as I'm a VP fanboy (thanks to you), there are a few refinements the VPs that I have seem to lack. However, all things considered, the VP is the better buy and value than modern Gibson's--especially when you factor in the amazing classic tone. Why Epi did something so great and Gibson passed when they could have had an amazing Thunderbird is beyond me. If I wanted a new Thunderbird of those two. It would without question be a VP.

Thursday.
I carried it around with me for days and days, to see if I still liked it.
I did!

Otherwise seems brand new. No other scratches, marks, etc.

Plays & sounds great; the strings are so light it almost feels like playing a treble guitar. Weird. :cautious:

that has had a nasty bump on the headstock. The question is: how bad is the neck? Just enough to crack finish or did wood crack too? Is it worth doing some preemptive gluing>

Nice! Will you be attempting to fill them or leave as is? Either way, enjoy.

If you will be attempting repair, read up and watch vids using this stuff. IMO pretty much the best way to go. No affiliation, just looks like the best solution for those type of issues.
Products - Gluboost

That stuff looks pretty interesting, thanks!

For now I'm going to leave it, see whether it worsens; as far as I can tell, they appear to be cosmetic. Which normally means I shouldn't mess with it, or I'll likely make it worse :bored:

I *think* it's just the finish. I'll look into it more when I have more time on the weekend.
But it was pretty cheap; I bid on/bought it with the assumption it was wood damage

I've just recently discovered two (2) interesting things:

1) VP does not fit well in new Epiphone Thunderbird case. Neck heel area doesn't seem to go in fully, causing lid to not want to close (as expected, doesn't fit at all in the old case - too long)

B) 2007 Unsung China Thunderbird doesn't fit either, too wide in the bottom :bag:
Nearly identical Korean? 'bird fits perfect :eyebrow:

That’s very strange. My ‘17 VP shipped and fits perfectly in the newest version of the Epi Thunderbird case.
