I've wondered since day one- why the tort hate here?

I have only liked the look of tort on a couple of guitars/basses. I just never cared for it for some reason but there is certainly a large market for it.

Yes, for reasons of strength still a V joint.

Maybe when machining it, if they don't get a perfect joint, they take another pass at it sometimes.

Well the 'bird' came out for almost a whole set on our "unplugged-ish" Thursday evening ( our drummer is injured after a bike crash ).
First time I've used it properly in years. Got loads of positive comments from the audience.
I would have played the entire 2 X 50 min, but the sound started intermittently dropping ( the barrel jack has started to fail ) so switched to my back up for the last few songs.

Speaking for myself, I think it's more tongue in cheek than anything. Tbirds don't wear tort. I personally am not a fan of the look. But were someone to offer me a nice classic sunburst P bass, I certainly wouldn't turn it down.

I I worked at the HOG on and off for years and still maintain a business relationship with them, not only that they are like family. I get my pricing from Bruce and he wasn't in. No biggie I pick it up this morning.

Speaking for myself, I think it's more tongue in cheek than anything. Tbirds don't wear tort. I personally am not a fan of the look. But were someone to offer me a nice classic sunburst P bass, I certainly wouldn't turn it down.

Exactly right. Since it's so often the PG style of the Fender world it gets a good deal of bashing which I've always seen as lighthearted and in jest.

Lollars do sound great! The black chrome covers get a bit worn after a couple years, though.

That's some fine lookin tone wood right there. I think Pallet wood is native to France. It's pretty rare so you don't see many basses built from it.

I think they pronounce it 'Pallay' wood

In Canada it is pronounced - Pal-eh!

Briefly tried a Dingwall D Roc yesterday in a local shop. That shop is out of my usual circuit, but I enjoy going there when I'm in that area, as they often have stuff other shops don't. I wasn't able to plug in, sadly, as the clerk was busy with other clients and never got to me (I wasn't buying anyway). Very nice touch, neck a bit chunkier than a Thunderbird but still played reasonably fast. Nothing remotely vintage-y about those basses. Don't know how you'd hang a strap on it though, didn't see the usual pegs, but saw 2 holes where they would logically be. For that money, I'd rather buy another Gibson, but it's definitely a very well-made instrument.

Tort (not my first choice but can look cool on some basse) reminds me of the smell of the HS music room…the old Guitar Trade monthly mailer….old mom and pop music stores….. Blues Brothers…..hard to explain…..somewhat evocative…..

Nope, the lower horn was definitely D-Roc.
