Thunderbird Club

That last part is interesting 'cos when I asked Gibson about the serial #(519096)of the "67", they said that number was likely from 65.
The modern JIT supply chain wasn’t even a gleam in their eyes back then. So mfr date snd sale date were often far apart except on the fastest moving models.

Thanks! Yeah, that was my plan if I do that just in case. I can adjust to lighter strings.

I think the compliments just might have to do with the person behind the bass as much as anything else.;)
Agreed. It’s a gorgeous bass, but so is Chucky’s playing. Every time he posts a recording I wonder that wasn’t his living. Or at least a big chunk if he didn’t want it full time.

Ever thought of trying black coated or tapes? I confess I wasn't initially impressed with all the black on my modern Thunderbird, but it grew on me and black strings actually look great. If you can find some that work sound wise. At first I thought black strings looked goofy on it when I got it, but they actually look great. The DR BBs were not really a good match on that bass so they didn't last.

I agree it would look cool - but the D'Addario nickel rounds sound awesome on this bass. In fact, I think it may be chosen for one of our songs to be recorded in Feb. This is our own rehearsal-space recording of the original song by our guitarist Paul. We recorded it to get a better idea of what we'll do in the studio. I feel my bass tone isn't quite there - I want more zing and presence as it doubles as a lead-line.

I posted this recently here - sorry for the redundancy :) Paul overdubbed the horn-section and another guitar track - I sounds good, but I can't wait to hear it done in a pro-recording studio!

I don't recall ever seeing a Gen1 with a black back on a Tobacco burst. Makes you wonder if there were some repairs...or... who knows.

Mine...

Anything possible but it's also possible it had the neck surgery decades ago and the whole bass was re-finished like that to balance visually with the dark neck/hs. It's actually an aesthetically savvy way of hiding the surgery. If the (nitro) re-fine was 50 yrs old - the finish will look like any 50yr old original finish with player wear, dings and checking etc.

Probably a fake. I'd still give you $2k to ease the pain of this discouragement. ;)

This result is a match only if the serial number is impressed on headstock and stamped on headstock
Your guitar was made at the
Kalamazoo Plant, MI, USA
in 1965 or 1968
Production Number: 519096

IIRC, Gibson serial numbers in the 60s are notoriously inaccurate, as they would reuse parts of the range in different years.

Tualatin's a good town, it's where Sunn's come from!

...I have La Bella Black tapes on my FrankenGoth, looks and sounds great. And considering the black strings, hardware, body and neck and the dark rosewood fretboard it takes on a kind of stealth look.

Probably one of the most beautiful basses I’ve ever seen was a satin black Yamaha unlined fretless with an ebony board, black hardware and black tape wound strings. Just looked so sleek and sexy.

If you’re tape curious but don’t want to commit to filing a nut, just get a set of the La Bella Black tapes in light gauge and they’ll fit perfectly in a stock nut. They really are a very good sounding string that brings things to the table that a flat or round can’t, plus they feel awesome under finger.

Thanks for the good info.

Might not look bad on this G&L with ebony board either. But that's another day.... But sexy I could use. Might need to bump that experiment up a little. Need all the help I can get.

I’d ditto the Chucky kudos, his sound and playing style on his vintage and newer recordings is awesome regardless of the bass he’s playing.
Like others here, I think he could make a turd with strings sound decent. Me on the other hand, I can make a nice bass sound like a turd. But I have fun.

With all the collective excitement about your "new" Thunderbird, I used mine yesterday. I even relied on the neck PU only a little more just to get more a feel for your II. I'm thinking you're gonna like it!;) I hope all the hype proves justified for you. My '64 just sounds right to me. It's not more aggressive and not more anything I can really describe, it just has "it." I hope you find that true of your's when it lands home.
