here's a picture of my JACKBIRD, where the button is located from the factory. Granted it is a neckthru, so the plate is not there, but you'll get the idea.

ah i see what you mean now, cheers.
i might have to put mine on the top part of the body part that bolts to the neck tho,as i have a massive metal plate where the bolts that hold the neck in are.

You can drill thru the plate. Other people have done that. It's not hard to drill thru metal if you have a sharp drill bit. Others have also used one of the neck bolt screws to do it. Check the thread for Epi T-birds, I think someone shows how there. Someone once posted a link to a site that showed the whole process. I can't find that site tho.

ive heard that thats the easyest method,so it basically puts the strap nut in the same place as it ios on the gobson thunderbirds right?.how do i fill in the hole on the wing and make it look nice tho?

my bird is the standard dark sunbursty type colour

i have a 3inch wide strap but it still drops quite a bit.lol.

cheers for the help guys,i might just be able to play the bird again.:bassist:
For my Thunderbird, I had this strap company{ Italia Straps} in Marina, Ca. make me a four inch leather strap for my Gibson Thunderbird, & a five inch wide leather strap for my 11 pound Gibson Les Paul Standard bass. I then took them to my cobbler, & had him glue in, about an 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch of memory foam, followed by some Swede,on the back side of the leather strap. Works like a charm. The memory foam contours to your shoulder, & the Swede doesn't allow for an sliding, & the width, helps with the weight.

MY Dillion DFBB - TBird: This thing is so close to a Gibson even I am amazed on how it sounds/plays for what I paid for it. ( note: the Jackson is still my #1 )

so now I have 3. A JacksonBird, a DillionBird, and the good ole "standard" EPiBird. I said in a post on July 11th, that someday I would find a Dillion Bird, and yep, found one all right!!! MY GAS is over for a bit, but what NON-GIBSON TBIRD will I find out there next???? WHO KNOWS.

Family PIC's to follow..

Glad theres such a community of t-bird owners here :D I got an Epiphone bird a few months back and I'm loveing it, after seeing Nikki Sixx with one i just fell in love with the shape, and then when I played it that was it, I had to have one :p

amimbari: That Jacksonbird looks really nice, how'd you get your hands on it?

Ian

Glad to see another member in the TBIRD area...

your question:
"amimbari: That Jacksonbird looks really nice, how'd you get your hands on it?"

thats an easy question to answer Ian, about 1600 dollars in 1994-1/2.. owned it ever since.

Ah right, how does it play in comparison to other tbirds? I'm curious now, as far as I knew theres were only the Gibson, Epiphone and Spector 'Birds out there

oh no there are MANY other companies that made TBIRD/FBIRD bodied guitars beyond the ones you mentioned in your post. some do not call it a tbird/fbird, my jackson is a TBX, my Dillion is a DFBB...etc, but the shape/style is the same, and when you search unless you know the specific model, you won't find it.

if you are asking to compare a GIBSON vs JACKSON-- I can't, as I never had the 2 side by side to jam on back to back thru the same amp/settings, HOWEVER my Dillion's neck is so close to any Gibson I ever played, I can be fair and say neck-feel-wise I actually can say "REAL CLOSE", I adjusted the action as close to the Jackson as I could on my Dillion, but the Jackson has a bound neck, so rubbing the edges I can feel the difference, but for general playing...naw VERY VERY CLOSE.

EPI bolt on's have a wider neck from the get-go and although I play mine constantly it is not the same.

Tone wise?... IMHO JACKSON #1 why?

( that's EMG35's compared to passives AND 15-1/2lbs of wood -- yes it is a heavy unit, and I like it that way )

The other night I saw my old drummer's new band, and the bassist had a nonreverse thunderbird that he played through a sunn 300t and it sounded brilliant. I want one now as my passive bass.

This thread has been rather enlightening about other brands that make cheaper ones, because the epiphone one plays horrrrrribly.

can anyone compare the dillion one to the gibson one tonally?

I did have the chance to play GIB to DILION thru the same amp/same settings when I went to have it setup, so I can give you a comparison.

GIB-neckthru DILL-setneck, both VERY close in weight, both passive, both tonal ranges are unbelievably close in ALL respects except I string mine with 44/63/80/102's,rounds, and the one I was playing was 45/65/85/105 rounds. According to Dillion, they use specially wound pickups to precisely match the Gibson spec ( I never took mine out to see what it says on the backside ), and then shipped them to Korea for installation.

BOTTOMLINE, Very good copy and DIllion made theirs 1000.00 cheaper, (MADE IN KOREA remember ), however they stopped making them in 2006, so you can't walk into a store and pick one up.

I would buy another DFBB in an instant if one became available in a different color.
As far as a non-reverse goes, my next investment I hope will be a Black Fernandez.( this one is TB member cetera's ) :D

BTW I have an EPI, and although the neck is noticeably wider, I play it all the time, it has a unique crappy growly tone, that I cannot get out of the others, and many tunes are perfect for that sound blended with the other instruments.

I'm with amimbari on this, although the Epi might not be as good quality as say the Gibson is, the tone it has is something I havent found in any bass, it's why i love it :D

HEY Biggins, sometimes "CHEAP IS BETTER"... that goes for any guitar when it serves your needs.

It does stay in tune after I beat up on it pretty bad. :D

I don't record with the EPI, and to me it is a one trick pony, but I have a couple others to do everything else, It is a fun unit to play live, and be a little more aggressive with it cause if it is damaged, there's little lost.

I'm not say that cheap isnt better, and for the quality you're getting for 300 quid (130 for me) its serving me very well.

Question for everyone: Am I missing much with the Epi? all I keep getting told is i should have got a warlock or the Gibson Bird :scowl:

ask yourself that question, can you buy one of those for 300 quid? -- would you want to spend that much more for a bass, does the EPI do what you want, and are you happy? ---easy answers :D

Hey, i have just bought a Epi Goth bird 2nd hand, i have only half payed it off though so i dont have it yet, i bought it mostly on looks (i only gave it a quick play before buying to make sure it wasnt wrecked). What can u guys tell us bout this one? pros, cons? advice? anything thanks

Hi all,
Found your forum while trying to find out whom my new thunderbird is made by. Any help would be appreciated. It’s in very thick off white paint very nicely done, the headstock shape and profile of the neck are spot on. It has no raised centre section on the back and a body contor. It plays well and it’s a shame it is not fixed neck construction. There is no (or any sign there has ever been) maker’s logo on the truss rod cover.

Thanks for your time and any help you can give.

Mrkev

Also while I’m here, a few photos of my 60’s thunderbird 2 ex peter over-end watts of mott the hoople, My 2nd favourite bassist after mr gene simmons, after 18 years I still can’t believe I own it…any guesses how much I paid for it.

Also my ibanez thunderbird. Not a good copy at all really, Neck to far forward on the body, headstock shortened to compensate, and no attempt to copy neck profile at all.
All that said though, it sounds great-always sounds like it has new strings on it no matter how old they are.
