thunderfunk - what cabs do you use?

I've decided to bite the bullet and buy a new tfb550-B. I'm pretty excited about getting this thing but this is the first non-combo amp I've ever purchased so I have my apprehensions.

TFB550 users out there: what do you guys use for cabs?


(I was thinking of getting something along the lines of one 8ohm2x10 and one 8ohm1x12)

just to play devils advocate I DON'T like my funk with the ht112 as much as I do aguilar gs112's with the 'funk. to me the funk is a little light on the very low end, I like full bottom, so the aguilar tends to make up for that. whereas my eden wt550 has ALOT OF low end and works better with the HT112 if you like a FULL BOTTOM sound.

if you like a leaner more punchier sound 'funk and ht112 is a great combo.

I use an Epi UL410s2 and absolutely love it. I'm trying to scrounge the funds to upgrade to the 750. I sold my Berg mini-stack this evening as I have not been using it since getting the Epi cab. I agree that the TFunk\Berg match is not great if you are looking for a nice, full sound - the mids\highs are unbeatable, though IMO. I personally think wider sounding cabs work best with the TFunk - since it is relatively mid-focused, the wider tone helps even things out.

Congrats it's a great amp. Even though the LM II is the flavor of the month, I still prefer it. I'm running LDS Custom cabs. I had Don build me a 210 UL and a 212 UL. He used B & C drivers (the same as the Epi series ones) with selenium tweeters. They're light 42 and 52 pounds respectively, and Don prices them very competitive. I got both cabs for a little more then a 410 S1 Epi goes for. Definitely worth checking out. Several TB'ers own them.

+1.. the Series II 410UL sounds WONDERFUL with the TF. The Berg HS series is way too much 'mids on mid's for my ear with the TF. However, it also sounds good. It really depends on if you are looking for a more old school, tighter, mid punchy tone (Berg HS), or a somewhat more modern pop/funk tone with more true deep lows and a more airy, smooth, sweet top end (410ULII). Both sound great for what they are.

The Whappo Jr. is cool also.... it's wide and deep sounding, but with a very polite and organic top end... so it really sounds more like a REALLY good, more articulate 2x15 cab to my ear.

I've yet to make my TF sound 'bad'... just depends what you want.

Here's an oversimplification:

Will Lee type tone.... Epi410UL (II).. big, even, with some grind and sparkle

Willie Weeks.... Berg HS210/410... tight, punchy, growly but more mid voiced (I have not heard the AE's yet)

Bob Babbit..... Whappo Jr.... big, fat, warm, old school with articulation.

Burk's LDS cabs sound great also, and are closer to the Epi (I) tone to my ear, and I also LOVE the sound of a pair of Aguilar DB112's with the TF... tight, punchy, growly, but with nice low end extension versus the Berg mini stack... really nice!

I said this in another thread, but the 750 really is a big improvement (IMO) in tone. Hard to believe, I know, but it captures the TF tone but sounds even more 'natural' and even. I would like to hear the Accugroove cabs with this head, but honestly I don't know if there is a better match than the UL310.

I've gigged w/ my tfb-420 using three different cabs, steelsound 2x12, ampeg pr1528he and schroeder 1212L. I've listed them from "liked least to best" tone-wise--none sounded bad. I'm currently diggin' the 1212l--punch w/o boom, good articulation, wicked light! A tweak of the timbre knob depending on the bass used--mij precision thinline, reverend rumblefish or dple II w/ darkstar

I've used my 550B with an Ampeg 610svt, a Bag End D12, and a couple Bag End S15B-D's. It sounds great with all of them.
My only advice to is pick a cabinet with a high efficiency rating to get the most volume for your buck. Whatever cabinet you get, the TF will do it justice.
