The company still makes "Dominant" strings, one of the earliest brands of perlon string, now considered a standard for comparison to other synthetic string sets. Other string brands from the company include:

  • Vision
  • Spirocore
  • Versum
  • Superflexible
  • Belcanto
  • Infeld (Red and Blue)
  • Prazision
  • Alphayue
  • Peter Infeld
  • Dominant Pro
Many famous violinists, including Itzhak Perlman, Hilary Hahn, and Isaac Stern, have used Thomastik-Infield strings at some point in their career.[1]

History

In 1919, Dr. Franz Thomastik, a violin maker, and Otto Infeld, a civil engineer, decided to found a company. They started manufacturing steel strings.

Thomastik-Infeld's workshops were completely destroyed in World War Two.

In 1970, the Dominant strings were launched. In those years, the conventional gut string was challenged by perlon strings; Thomastik-Infeld offered this type of string, making the brand very popular for virtuosi across the world.

The company was run by Peter Infeld from 1994 until his death on April 15, 2009. He was 67 years old. The company is now run by Zdenka Infeld.

In 2019, Thomastik-Infield celebrated its 100 year anniversary.

I'm pretty sure the O.P. is asking specifically about TI Flats, as in the electric bass strings, not the general history of Thomastik-Infeld.

One of the first all metal double bass strings was the T-I Präzision, which now appear to no longer be offered. But they were a chrome wrap on a solid core. I wonder if any of this technology made it into their Electric Flats offerings.

I just wanted to add that I put TIs on my 2006 Stingray yesterday and I am absolutely blown away. The way it plays and sounds now, and how low I got it setup, I doubt it gets any better than this.

I prefer the Ti flat on my previous SUB Ray4 too, smooth the aggressive tone in good way , meanwhile G string sound get fuller and meaty, E string just clear and solid like EB Cobalt flat compare to GHS flat on same Ray4.

Overall tone like Ball-less passive P bass , but raise both 2band EQ able make she sound growl which i cant dial out from passive P bass with same Ti flat.

Also, I find that if you set it up so that there’s just a little bit of clanking the strings that really brings out the stingray tone, especially with flatwounds where you’re not going to get an abundance of harshness. Eq usually almost flat with like a 10% boost on bass, mids flat or small 5% boost and then trouble boost at like 25%
