When I find a brand that works for me, I tend to be loyal in a non-fanatical way. I’ve stuck with Marbass amps for years, love fEARful cabs, and have driven Hondas since the late 90s. TI Jazz Flats have been my go-to strings for almost 20 years. Until recently, I had them on my four main players (all self-built).
I feel compelled to publicly confess that I don’t have any basses strung with TIs at the moment, and for some reason, feel a bit guilty! I know that’s dumb, but they have been so good to me in many different settings.
At the moment, my medium-scale fretless is wearing D’Addario tapes, which sound beautiful and more lively on that bass. My long-scale 5-string fretless has GHS Pressurewounds, which have a nice growl while still being fairly smooth to the touch. My short-scale fretless has LaBella LTFs, which are OK, but I don’t know if i will stick with them. They have lower output and a thumpier tone than the TIs, which can be good in some situations. My long-scale fretted 5-string has D’Addario rounds, which are the first roundwounds I have bought since the 90’s, I think.
I previously enjoyed having TIs on all four basses and dug the subtle differences, but I am finding the greater choice of sounds to be fun when recording. I’m eager to hear the differences if and when gigs start happening again.
So, this is a silly topic for a thread, but I feel better having confessed my disloyalty to an old reliable friend. Of course, I am saving all the TIs and will go back to them on some basses eventually, I imagine.
