TI Jazz Flats - First Impression

I did so much research to try and find the perfect flatwound for my fretless, and everything pointed to TI Jazz Flats. However, I was very apprehensive to try them because of the high cost, and how many people I’ve seen complain that they’re so low tension, it’s like playing rubber bands.

Well, I finally decided to just pull the trigger… I figured if they were super low tension, then at least they’d be going on a fretless where that is desirable (at least for me).

They came in today and I am shocked at just how normal the tension is. They’re definitely lower tension than other flats and I need a little more relief coming over from Chromes, but they aren’t nearly as floppy as I was lead to believe. They feel like a normal gauge roundwound, in my best guess, and I’ve definitely played with lower tension/looser strings than these. Personally, I’ve always hated the stiffness of most flats, so these are perfect for me.

They sound great too. Tonally, they seem to be a lot more versatile than Chromes (at least on my Ibanez Portamento SRF705), and they seem to have more body and sound more natural.

As mentioned, I will have to add relief (and it’s probably wise to do a full setup), but I can’t wait to do that and for them to settle in. I’ll add my thoughts later.

One thing to mention is that they feel a bit rougher than my Chromes, but maybe that’s because I wiped them down with isopropyl before installing. Not sure if that will improve with more playtime, but it’s not a hindrance or anything - just thought I’d mention it.

TI's are "high mileage" strings. Five to ten years. Every time I string up a bass with TIs, my truss rod smiles at me and says, "thank-you". Most of the time I have to relax the tension on my necks with TIs.

Plus, they sound great!

LOL! Yeah, I’ve so far had to loosen the rod 5/8 of a turn to get roughly the same relief I had with Chromes (and may need a bit more, but I’m waiting to confirm).

They were put on a neckthrough so anything I can do to ease the tension on this neck is welcome!

Five to ten years? Every time I string a bass with TIs, I know I’ll never have to buy strings for that bass again. I’ve had the same sets on some basses for 15+ years. They get better with age. Makes the price seem a lot more reasonable.

Me too!

Although think I'm over new strings entirely at this point. The DR Sunbeams on my p-bass are at least 10 years old. I figure, if their is a guitarist in the room, any "new string zing" is getting swallowed up anyhow.

They will mellow out a little after a couple weeks also. The ones on my Precision are 7 years old and sound better all the time. I put them on the day I bought it new. I also have the shortscale version on my old Musicmaster. Anyone who plays my bass always remembers the strings. They are not loose at all; they are the perfect tension.

I need to see if I can find some sound clips of these strings in action...I am so curious how they compare to my experience with flats in other brands...
