Tim Commerford playing a Stingray again.

One of those is loaded with a Nordstrand BigMan pickup, which is a pair of Big Split split coils side by side in the MM case. I've built two bases with that pickup and it's a beast.

Actually the BigMan is just (!) two Big Singles in a MM cover. If it was 2 Big Splits I think I'd call it a BigSplitMan. ;-) (And we have made those on occasion.)

On the subject of Stingrays, in the first RATM album, what is the clicky trebly noise after each note coming from the Stingray on each song. Does Tim Commerford have a low action on that album, causing fret buzz?

Sounds like a typical Sting Ray tone with fairly hard plucking to me. If plucked softer, the "clicky noises" are usually much less obvious.
Sade's bassist, Paul Denman, has a typical "no clicky noises" Sting Ray tone to me.

Carey,

Out of curiosity how does a "BigSplitMan" sound compared to the Bigman?

I think I've settled on the Dan Lutz setup on my upcoming Stambaugh but if it doesn't sacrifice much tonewise I like the idea of not having hum when splitting the bridge pickup.

He put tape over his pickup and has a eadg string dividers he put in himself instead of the standard a d or d g string dividers that comes with the stingray stock.
And yes the tape and string dividers helped him get that super low action with out it being unbearable and too clicky, with out these mods his bass would sound more like Korns bassist ..
