I have to agree and say buy used you'll get better gear for your money, If you want a 5 string look at used ESP's IMHO they are great basses for the cash, the 35" scale really sounds good for metal.
As far as an amp buy used too if your dead set on a combo Eden Nemesis Combos go for about 300 used an sound killer as well and will be loud enough.

Seriously, buy used.

Entry level Deans IMO are not giggable or good at loud volume. Put the same $200-300 into a used Fender MIM, Squier or even an Ibanez ATK. It will be good for your bedroom, basement, small gigs, etc.

I don't play metal, but I can get a rediculous metal sound out of my ATK.

I wouldn't call it an entry level bass either... other than the price. If I found out we were playing Madison Square Garden tomorrow night I'd be playing my ATK.

Mine was 299.99, brand new.

Well, assuming we're all adults, or must of us, I'd like it if I was just helped, and given some feedback. Since there is already a thread on 'your least favorite bassist', you can vent there, and not here.

Now, if only the other 95% of the users on here could figure that out. We're all guilty at some point, but some more than others.

MY advice, for your price point, would be:

Bass - Ibanez ATK (BIG thumbs up for rock/metal), Squier CV or VM, or SX (their quality far surpasses what the price would usually allow)

Amp - Acoustic (very aggressive amps, good for rock/metal, and well priced) and Peavey (especially vintage, could survive a nuclear war, overall good quality, and very well priced used).

Steer clear of the "metal shaped" basses, the shape is their gimmick. If you can buy used, do it, especially the stuff I just listed. But if not, no biggie. But the stuff listed above will be cheap enough for you to afford and high quality enough for you to grow into, not have to scrap after you've been playing for 6 months.
