Time to tell the truth: how much does your bass weigh?

Pilgrim...

Thank you for the work you have put into this thread!! When I was in my 20s, the weight of a guitar or bass meant nothing to me. In my (later) 50s, it has become important. Many manufacturers don't list weights. I realize it varies for each guitar of the line, but I also suspect they would rather not discuss it.

Your great thread and even more important spreadsheet gives us "weight aware" players a reference.

Again, THANK YOU, and keep up the great work!!

Very kind of you! Thanks!

I see the usefulness as an informative thread, but I don't see the point of the spreadsheet with brand and model since the same brand/model will vary wildly due to the inconsistent weight of the woods used. :)

Still makes plenty of sense to me, actually. With enough samples, average weights can mean a lot. Plus, you'd get to see the outliers for yourself.

Since it's a spreadsheet, you can download it, slice and dice it, sort it, average the weights of any part of it, or play with it anyway you want.

One of these days I really should take the time to separate the Squier models from the Fender brand-name models. Right now I have them all entered under Fender. I may do that on the next update.

I see, I don't mean to disrespect the hard work you put in there in any way.

S o what brand and model is it? I can't enter it without that info.

The bass is just known as the Hideous Claw. Technically, it was made at Alembic by Alembic employees, but it's not an Alembic and not something they could make or offer (the 3 guys that worked on it don't work there anymore).

And JimmyM - it does have straplocks - the weight of the bridge (there is a 1" x 7" x 1" solid brass "tonebar" under the bridge saddles) offsets the headstock and the super long upperhorn balances it really well. So it's not that bad to me... but for those used to 9lb. Fenders you would be in for a world of hurt.
