Double Bass tips for easier playing

I've been playing double bass for 3 years now & am starting to get ok at it. I moved onto EUB because of feedback issues, especially at LOUD volumes (i play in dub reggae & jungle bands) & absolutely love it. My question is how can I make it easier to play my bass? My fingers hurt (the one after the index really)especially after lots of detailed solos & holding down notes for long times. I also find that the fingerboard has got quite sticky.
Any advice from the experienced players please?

Hi Jim.
Your profile is empty so we have no idea the gear you play on.
The fingers hurt on what hand, the plucking or fingering one?

Did you bring your instrument to a luthier for setup?
Maybe the grooves at the nut are too high from the fingerboard.
(one or two business cards space is well enough)

What strings are you using?
Which EUB is it?
Did you follow a few lessons from a good teacher?

As for cleaning the fingerboard, I suggest you wipe it with a rag after each playing.
You can use a little rubbing alcohol if it's too dirty, but beware not to splash on the instrument! :)

Do you have a teacher? It might be technique. Maybe you're pushing too hard...or maybe your fingers aren't arched correctly. A few lessons with a good teacher might be a good idea.

Also, do you stretch/warm up before you play? I usually lightly stretch my hand and each finger before I play for an extended time.
