Tired of Same Old Classic Rock!

I've been listening to and playing the same songs for so long that I'm risking serious burnout, and don't want to lose my love for them. Beatles, Cream, Creedence, Aerosmith, Grand Funk, Skynrd, Allman Brothers, etc. Stuff played on FM back in the day, now heard over and over on satellite.

What I need is the name of great bands I missed out on back in the day, or maybe bands that had only one or two great LPs. For instance I've never listened to King Crimson or The Stooges. Maybe stuff too hard, heavy, or controversial for terrestrial radio back then.

So who else am I missing out on?

King Crimson indeed, also Yes, Gentle Giant, Genesis (Peter Gabriel era mostly), Supertramp, Pink Floyd (dig into their more obscure stuff, not just The Wall or Wish You Were Here)...

I've discovered tons of newer (metal) bands just by surfing YouTube, you might give it a try!

Edit: Steely Dan too! That's how pop music should sound like!

What kinds of sounds are you into now? Do you still like straight forward rock and bluesy rock or are you wanting to go in a different direction altogether?

There is all kinds of great music out there, even brand new stuff. However you have to go looking further than your run of the mill commercial radio, I suggest looking into independent radio if you have any in your area, these are generally lower wattage stations and you need to be within a 50 mile radius or less to tune them in.

Just yesterday evening I was thinking about this, because the only radio stations in my area worth listening to play classic rock all the time & never add anything new.
How many times can a guy listen to Hotel California & Comfortably Numb w/o getting really bored of it?

I'm even bored with what I have loaded up an a thumb drive, so time to put something new on there.
Too bad the only station I liked with new music switched to 80's pop.

If you like the 70s, classic rock vibe, but want something newer, you are in luck. There is an entire subsection of music right now that hearkens back to that era. Don't let the names rattle you, it is all marketing.

+1 on some Return to Forever. All of their LPs are worthy with Romantic Warrior being perhaps the most well known. Then branch out to some of the individuals solo productions; Stanley Clarke, Chic Corea, Al Di Meola and Lenny White.

I'm still into 60-70-80 Rock and even Pop from that Era I may have missed, IMO the nadir of music as I know it. I'm really about musical craftsmanship and strong vocals, and lead guitar virtuosity. Strong hooks are a plus. What I don't care about are catchy lyrics, or dominant bass drums, so unless a 90-now band has superb musicians, not really interested. Heck, most songs now days don't even have a real lead break, just some power chords.

And yes, I am capable of change, after years of hating it, I've been in Country bands since 2008, some REAL good musicians in that genre for sure, I've even bought some Country CDs.

As far as 90's bands with strong vocals and guitar work heavily inspired from the 70's is Stone Temple Pilots. They get a bad-rap usually but you really need to look at their deep cuts. There is a new (2010's and up) hard-rock/"metal" band called Ghost that has some good guitar work and is heavily driven by strong melodies. I use the term "metal" very loosely, they are more like Black Sabbath than anything else.
