The blanket statements probably come from people doing a search on something, like Primus, and getting all the results at once so dates probably aren't noticed.

This is a quote from a thread in Bassists from about seven months ago: "Geez, it's interesting to hear people discuss which Primus albums are the best and worst. Every single thing I've heard by them is absolute crap. Awful tone, zero songwriting skills and a gymnastic approach to playing (and the Russian jusge gives them a 5, awww). Yeah, man, the world is waiting for masterbating bass hero. Blech, blech, blech." Now, the whole thread was mostly compliments towards Primus, but one bad banana is going to catch your attention a lot more than all the compliments will. Heck, I bet there's over a thousand pro-Les posts on TalkBass, some of them my own no doubt. People like to focus on the bad sometimes, I guess.

As a Les fan, I saw the title of this thread and immediately thought to myself, "I should get in there and defend Les - he's my very own personal bass guitar hero!" Then, when I get here, I find that there's no defending to be done! *pouts*

Just in case something does get started, I have something to say on Les' behalf... he does not!

Don't get me wrong, I do like Les, and Primus BUT.......... I think he's a very overrated player. I think he has a very elementary slap style, I think he's a bit of a sloppy player, I don't think his techinque is anything great.

And no, I'm not one of these people who think Jaco's the only bass player who ever mattered, I just think there are plenty of players better than Les that don't get half the recognition he does. (Adam Nitti comes to mind as one of those players) Again, I do like Les. I think he's a good player, but I don't think he should be given "Bass God" status like he is.

I have hardly ever seen anyone here say they hate or bash Les. These type of I hate so and so threads never have any good to offer anyone and almost always lead to a big insulting contest.
