To be or not to be concerned?...

Hey Talkbass, not too long ago I bought some new strings (Just some Ernie Balls, probably doesn't matter). I did everything else right, usually never had problems with stringing basses before. Problem? I'm not even going to explain why or how, but I cut the A string way too short. When I realized what I've done, it was much too late (I can't hot glue strings back together and my cutters don't have an undo button), and my A string can't even go a complete revolution around my tuning peg. The angle on the nut can barely even be called an angle, and it looks just ridiculous among the other strings. Just shameful.

Thing is, it's been about 6 hours since I strung the monstrosity on, it actually hasn't had an issue with the way it sounds, and it seems to have stayed in tune pretty well. No buzzes. Playing it has just been fine.

The dilemma I have is whether I should just order another A string IF it starts to give me issues later on or just leave it there. Pics included. (Also, I know the E string looks like it's lapping over itself. It's really not. I guess it just looks like that since it gets fatter past the part that goes on the pegs.)


TLDR: I'm bad at stringing basses, A string doesn't even wrap once on the peg, angle is 2 degrees max, sounds and tunes fine, replace or nah?

Ehh... Not ideal... Not very secure... A new string would be a good idea to at least have on hand in case there is a problem.

I agree with Jason...you're asking for it leaving it like that. And you shouldn't use hot glue...you should use solder.

Haha, I figured just as much, I just wanted some reassurance and make sure there wasn't another insane person somewhere else in this world like me that had his/her strings the same way. And right... solder. How could I forget..

If it becomes a problem at the wrong time it can be a very big problem.

If you have it stuffed all the way down to the bottom of the hole in the tuner I'd just get a spare set of strings (you should have those anyways) and not worry about it unless it becomes a problem. It looks like it will hang in there to me.

I'm very surprised that the open A doesn't buzz.

You shouldn't cut an A string at all:

That's basiclly how I string every time and I never had a problem.
