The Jazz V routs are 3.9" and 4.1" wide and spaced for 18mm at the bridge.
Dimarzio pickups are 3.7" wide, both, and spaced for 19mm at the bridge.

Fralin doesn't do a humcancelling 5, as far as I know.

And I've got the East preamp in it. I'm not a fan of outboard preamps in general. I have used a Sadowsky bass before and the pre was okay. Probably not the solution for this bass, though.

SGD Lutherie posts frequently to the board.

He seems (no personal experience) very willing to work with is customers to give them what they are looking for.

I suggest talking to him to see if he can put you a set of pickups together that will fit a Fender Jazz V and sound like DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups.

The fact you know exactly what you're looking for should make this much more straight forward than it could be.

Based on what you just said. I'd sell it. What will make you happy seems to be another aggressive sounding 5er. Take the money from the sale and get a custom made bass. I am biased of course but Brubaker can make you a very aggressive sounding 5 that you may love to play. I'd contact Kevin Brubaker and discuss what you like amd may be looking for. I have a Brubaker KXB5 in the makings. I think you might like the way Warriors, and Wyn Basses sound as well.

All good ideas. I'll be looking into those.

Seems to me that it boils down to my willingness to take a risk on expensive pickups that I can't hear first. If nothing works and I'm willing to take a bath on some "buying high and selling low" on sets of pickups, I'll either come across something that fits my needs or it's time for a bass-divorce.

The preamp is a great pre and I have used them in a number of basses. But as I have found, they modify the tone that goes into them. If that's no good, the preamp isn't magical. It can help, but will reach limitations.

If I had to put an order to what I would try, it would be pickups, bridge, and preamp. I'd plan to sell if that doesn't work. While I feel like an ash body or an all maple neck could make things interesting, that just puts me over the edge to "new custom built bass" territory.

There's no website, or Amazon play list, where folks can listen to different pickups before buying? That's a shame.

Tell me about it! I've often thought about making that sort of thing a reality... But a few thousand short on something like that.

I was doing some research on the pickups available for this size. The Delano JMVC5/FE is showing some promise.

People have told me that they are high output and drastically different than the typical J tone. Since that's kind of what this whole thing is about, they have certainly captured my attention.
If anyone wants to chime in on them, it's much appreciated.
