today's metal scene

I think for an old school metal The Sword is a great band! To me they're a perfect cross of early Sabbath and early Metallica.

The Sword is good ****! - the best stuff to come out of Austin in a long, long time

looking forward to seeing them with Motorhead next month

I'm 37 years old, been listening to the same things for the past 25 years.
Black sabbath, metallica, slayer etc...
On the radio i'm listening to classic rock.
But the classic rock station we have here started to play some newer band.
2 songs that stand out so far are:
preistess - Lay Down
Billy Talent - Devil on my shoulder

Is there anything from those band or similar band I could check out?

another band thats similar in the vein of mastodon is minsk,... kind of a blend of stoner/psychadelic/sludge,... its kind of heavy and beautiful at the same time

I'd suggest 3 Inches of Blood and if you're into the more prog-metal stuff, then Protest the Hero is a good bet. I'd say BTBAM, but that's already a given for an amazing metal band. Also, this new band called Painted in Exile is worth checking out.
