Tokai Hardpuncher

Hello everyone

I have been offered a 2018 Tokai Hardpuncher. The thing is the model number is APB88 YS R. I have been searching all over and can not find this model number anywhere, not even in the Tokai registry. I am not sure where was it made or the quality of it. I can not try the bass beforehand, so I am trying to know everything I can before I make a decision.

Anyone can help with this?

Nowadays, Tokai is built in China. Never played one of the new ones, the old Japanese ones were awesome.

All the Japanese ones I've ever seen (and the one I played) looked amazing. I wouldn't be in as big a hurry to get a Chinese one.

Made in China copy of a Fender? Assuming it's a good one, assume it's priced similarly to a Squier Afinity, which is...a Chinese copy of a Fender (That Fender sells).

Thank you for that, but it is not the same bass. That is a APB80, and the one I am talking about is a APB88, but I am not really sure on the differences either. The price is around 400 USD

Not a problem. I thought that may have been it. It looks like a nice instrument. Decent price.

If I had to guess, the 88 is a notch up. Just looked at an 88 on eBay for twice. That's a buy from me.

The name "Tokai" means nothing here. This instrument isn't make by craftsmen at Tokai Gakki Co. It's production was sourced out to China by a purchasing agent in a cubicle. This bass was probably made in the factory that makes all the other Chinese P-bass copies. Shop around for the lowest priced Chinese product and go with that. The only difference will be the headstock decal.

I don't know. The new one I looked at (Invalid Link Removed) is made in Japan. Neck and finish look it too.

Tokai/tokai gakki made all fender Mij guitars. Top notch quality. Pretty hard to believe they sub out work to China.

I bought this for my personal Christmas present last year. Now I’m in love with a 1983 Japanese born P bass with a beautiful “soft V” and a baseball bat for a neck. Can’t speak to the new ones, but the early 80’s stuff is spectacular. You can still find them for under 400 bucks - although that’s becoming a tougher go these days.

For an original Tokai,...check with this guy,...I've bought a couple of basses from him and couldn't have been happier with the service or the basses. I'd look for an original Japanese made if I were in the market for a Tokai. Danny comes up with a fair amount of the Tokais and Grecos.
