Double Bass Tom Dooley

Hate to ask for help with creating a bass line but I am bored to death playing root fifth on this one! It's a 2 chord song using A and E with 8 beats per chord. Any suggestions?

Listen to the Kingston Trio's version, and duplicate the bass vocalist.

That is unfortunately above my ability. I haven't developed good enough of a ear yet.
