Yeah, he does have a very unorthadox style. I don't get it though. It doesn't have any appeal to me besides his excellent playing. Now Horne and Haslip are a different story altogether! These guys play better than most righties! I guess lefty folks just use a different part of their brain then us right handed folk. Just mastering playing 'backwards & upsidedown' and then on top of that with virtuoso skills is just phenominal! Now I rarely hear Jimmy Haslip slap but what Horne does is way outa this world!

Yo JimK, my band Rhythm Magik, will be at the 17th St. stage next Saturday evening at 8PM. We are a cover band. We're still working on our tightness as we just changed drummers but I think we'll be okay. If you make it, don't forget to stop by and say hello.

I've heard almost no Keith Horne stuff, but I dig what little has come my way.

Jimmy Haslip *used* to slap some, back in the warly Yellowjackets days, but not so much any more. he came and did a class or two when I was at BIT and I got to ask him about how he did it. he demonstrated the tecnique and it was WILD!!

That's cool...I've played that stage + the one at 25th/Norwegian Lady a few times, too.
I'll try to swing by; right now, I'm so pissed at the Beach....got a friggin' parking ticket on the 4th for parking in a space I have been using since 1982. I mean, damn, I was 5 blocks from the Oceanfront!

You're all right, Tom is phenominal....
This fall I'm having the priveledge of taking lessons from him.(He's from the St. Louis area). If I get any awesome tricks I'll bring them back for ya!

What I know so far is that he approaches electric technique by teaching it all on the upright. Scares the heck outa me, but he obviously knows what he's doing so I'll trust him ;)

IMO Tom Kennedy is one of the best bassist in the country. You don't hear much about him but go see him play! He is so solid and so funky and everyone who metioned his tone are right, it's awesome. Check out the Dave Weckl's double live CD and you'll hear what everyone's talking about.

I was trying to tell players about Tom kennedy for damn'er 10 years ! because I saw him with Dave in the fall of 93 and the 1st thing that struck me WAS his tone, which was real 'fat & clean and his articulation, and phrasing as played thru a song
If you would like a definition of clean punchy low & low-mids then this is the player you would like to hear with the exception being Athony Jackson but that's another story in it self.
