Double Bass Tommy Furtado at Jimmy Weston's

I'm curious to see how many NYC bassists worked with Tommy Furtado at Jimmy Weston's supper club. If you're one of the many, chime in.

I think I sent Will Lee in one night in the early 70's as a sub. My faint recall is, this job was not his thing!

Maybe 1970 Russell George sent me in as a sub.
Jay Leonhardt ( I hope I spelled that correctly ) had the gig after Russell.
Then I came in for the regular gig around 1973.
I loved that place. I got to meet and even sit in with some fine jazz musicians .

I sat in with Wynton Kelly one week before he passed! Bill Doggett ( "Honky Tonk" ) B3 player was cool as was Jonah Jones who may have used George Duvivier.

Pianist Dorothy Donigan played Misty one night for E Garner, with Louis Armstrong's bassist Arvell Shaw.


2 bands alternated from 800 to 200am or was it 900 to 300am? but I am not sure of times. 3 one hour sets, great gig, great 7.4 foot Steinway, Jimmy Weston was very cool.

Arnie Wise and John Wilcox were the drummers
I returned to gig in the 80's for another 2 years.

My personal favorite drummer there was a genius who sadly took his life, Les Perlman.

Norm "Scotty"... sorry, I don't know spelling. I believe Norm had the gig in the 80's.

A Saturday Night Live drummer did gig once... again not his thing Chris Parker.
Drummers Adam Nussbaum did a night or two
and Joey Baron ditto


I just realized- "you" are Steve Alcott.. I recall your name.. not sure if we spoke about things Tommy Furtado , or not.

Thanks for bring it up, that was my favorite venue!

edit Bobby Gosh was a writer singer pianist who had a trio there he use bassist Don Payne and drummer Alan Schwartzberg..

Thanks, John-I sent in Alex Blake ands his brother Russell a few times til I got fired for taking off too much. Got rehired pretty quickly, though, and got to use Bobby Pratt's immortal line, "What good's a steady gig if you can't take off?"

I worked with Tommy for a couple of months in Jimmy Weston's around 1975 or so. I remember I had the chair directly after John Giulino. I think Carol Colman was in before John.

I played Weston's a few times but I don't remember Tommy Furtado. I do, however, remember another bassist, Ernie Furtado. Did you know him? We're they possibly related?

I don't think so. When I was there. we alternated with Mike Cerotti, another piano player/singer-he did a lot of Italian stuff.

I ended up taking the B18 home with me when the place folded-it now resides happily at a fine recording studio.

I remember Mike. I knew him from Queens at the Golden Chariot, but I never played with him. I played at Weston's the first time with Daryl Sherman.

Note: I edited out a lot that I wrote originally because I felt that I strayed too far from the subject of Jimmy Weston's. Sorry for leading you down the garden path.

Not that I remember-that was probably before my time. Joe Coccuzzo had been the regular drummer before I was on the gig, and subbed a few times; great player.
