Ok, I heard Journey's Who's Crying Now on the radio again this morning and I said that's it, I have to find out what was behind Ross Valory's sick bass tone on the track.

A quick YouTube search took me to this clip of them live in the 80's and to my surprise, it's a fretted Steinberger!

I was tempted to say "more like tonal hell for me," but I don't dislike it quite that much, it's just not a sound I particularly care for.

It does sit very well in Journey's sound.

What sparked my curiosity on this track was the departure from his normal MM StingRay sound. The bass line is such an integral part of this song...

It's also nice that this is a live recording from the 80's and its sound is very close to the studio version.
