Tone Hammer DI appreciation thread

Zbysek can you remind me, with AGS engaged that means the Gain starts to saturate the EQ more is that right? I've been experimenting with the gain a little more towards noon so that when I play finger style it has a little more edge to it and it seems like the mids beef up a bit more too?

Yes, when you turn the gain CW, the sound wil start to saturate.

In order to understand what AGS does EQ-wise, have a look at post No. 1825 in the following thread:

Perfect thanks so much! When I listened back through my set from Sunday, I felt my finger style was sitting in the mix a bit more than I wanted. Sounded good and definitely wasn't buried, but didn't stand out quite as much either, I figured boosting the gain a bit would help.

When one boosts gain, the sound becomes mid-forward. Many players seem to be cutting some mids together with boosting gain on TH... Good luck!

Thank you haha. I think I recall seeing those settings Gain at like 11 to 12 ish and Mid Frequency cut to around 11?
I think the classic worship team Tone Hammer set-up is AGS always on, gain set so that digging in with fingers starts saturation, with pick is nicely driven. My gain is set about noon. Then cut the higher mids, like 9 or 10 o'clock, but the mids are still quite present not scooped sounding. The AGS with ample gain is pleasingly mid-forward, not harsh, and really cuts in the mix. The more I learn the more I find you get away with a lot of drive on the bass in workshop music.

Sweet I'll give those settings a try. I was rocking AGS and Gain at 9 then everything else noonish except a slight bass boost. But I liked the direction I was going with just boosting gain to 12.

You may find this video helpful. I did.

Thanks for posting. Good explanations there. I’m still figuring out what to do with mids as I’ve never played with them much. AGS on makes the THDI mid-forward in general I believe, I’ve only had one play through it so far (in worship band) and started out with the high mids cut, but I’m liking what I hear in this video with the low mids cut.

I don’t ’compete’ with as many instruments as he describes in the video, so I won’t need as much gain as he likes, but I also think my tone was bordering on ‘too polite’ from the stream I watched back (with IEMs plugged into laptop), with Gain quite low at around 7:30.

It wasn’t the regular sound guy on, so perhaps not the best week to judge it, but I’d have liked to have cut through a little more. I’m still figuring out how the Gain & Master interact, it might be that I had both a little too low. I’m always a bit wary of having things too cranked in case it annoys others in the band or the soundman, but maybe I overthink this, because I guess if they don’t like much bass they can always just turn it down.

I guess I want my P bass (with CS62 pickups, which I think are a little mid scooped anyway) to cut through the mix & the notes be clearly heard & not muddy without being overly aggressive. So last time I played I think I had the Gain & Master both too low, but when I heard it back afterwards I realised I could’ve got away with more, so I’ll try for a bit more of a beefed up sound on Sunday, without getting to the levels in that video!

I asked about stacking the pedals because I recently tried running my SH-1 Sansamp into my THDI. I really like the THDI sound in my IEM’s. For 75% of the songs I leave the SH-1 off and use it as a mute/tuner. But it works well as a clean boost (CH1) and high gain distortion (CH2) for the tunes that need it.

Played a gig last weekend with SH-1 -> THDI in front of my amp. I’m liking this pairing. I send the XLR out from the THDI to the board and it goes to the PA and comes back to my IEM’s. We all know what the TH w/AGS brings to the table. The SH-1 adds punch, articulation, drive, and compression with the bite and cabsim engaged. Kind of a “MOAR” option. I used it on a handful of tunes over three sets. Subtle but solid.

Since the release of the AG Preamp pedal, I keep expecting to hear something about an updated Tone Hammer. Has anyone heard any news of this?
I agree I think it's time for some updates. By itself though it's a great preamp, so in some ways it ain't broke!
In a perfect world I'd add this.....
Analog adjustable HP and low pass after the EQ section, with the ability to bypass on the 1\4 out.
Increase mid sweep up to maybe 2.5khz.
Move the bass centre to 80 hz.
And....a separate volume for AGS.

But to be honest - I dig it as it is.

Love my THDI, Had it for so long thru many many board builds. Even outlasted my VTBD which I thought I would have forever.
For those of you that have an Effectrode LA-1A - do try it in front of your THDI. One of my fave pedal combos of all time. That tube comp feeding the TH is divine. Currently not using mine together as the LA-1A at the front of a stage in a dive bar gives me anxiety.

THDI feeding a Quilter BB800 is pretty epic also.

I do not own a Tone Hammer pedal, and have never owned one, but I have considered buying several times.

Also I do use the Aguilar Tone Hammer amp emulation on my NUX Melvin Lee Davis Bass Preamp in my amp-less setup, and am really satisfied with the result, clear favorite to the other two amp simulation options in that pedal, but have considered perhaps replacing the NUX preamp for a real Tone Hammer preamp, and then combine it with an IR loader of some kind, to get the cab simulation I get from the NUX now.

The way I would definitely use it would be with the AGS circuit engaged for saturation always on low gain overdrive, and I kind of feel this is what it is intended for, the extra foot switch seems a bit pointless to me as there is no way to level match anyway.

Highly recommended!

IME, cab simulation is totally unneccessary with AGS on...
