Tone Hammer DI appreciation thread

@jcburn great post! I went the Tech21 route for a while using a SH-1 as a mini fly rig. Having two channels for different gain settings and the built in tuner were nice. I found my favorite settings sounded too harsh (clanky) on my passive j-bass unless I rolled the tone knob way back, then I liked the very compressed and punchy sound. It’s great for what it does well.

After many gigs, I brought my THDI to rehearsal and was reminded how organic and sweet it sounds in comparison. My preferred settings are very similar to yours. The amp-like quality of the TH really shines using IEMs. Now the SH-1 serves as a tuner/mute and dirt pedal. My Quilter head has a built-in limiter so I haven’t felt the need for a compressor.

I've been using the THDI exclusively in AGS mode since I bought it, used on a modern worship board. The other day I was playing around with preamps and used the THDI with AGS off, as a clean preamp/DI. It is remarkably good as a clean EQ preamp, EQ points tuned nicely. There is NO saturation even with the gain all the way up (AGS off), correct? I may try the THDI with AGS off and some favorite drive pedals in front of it for a while and see how that goes.

I agree with clean. With the AGS off I can get a great warm, fat tubey tone but I struggle because that AGS just has that magic mojo going on.....lol

No need to switch the AGS off, IME. Clean sounds can be achieved with AGS on by turning the gain control CCW.

I prefer the pedal with AGS on even for clean sounds. The only exception would be if I played slap technique-in that case I would need the frequencies above 3.5 kHz which AGS attenuates. For other standard techniques (fingers, pick), I don't need/want those frequencies...

IMHO, the attenuation of highs provided by the AGS on is particularly useful when there are drive pedals upstream...

YMMV

I'm trying to recall which Drive settings on the Head correlate to the AGS being engaged on the pedal. I wanted to say it was around 3 o'clock?

I am a long time user of Tone Hammer DI's. I have had two of the orignal clunky steel pedals and now have the new version.

This is the first time I have seen a counterfeit. "Tone Mallet" ??? ***?

I know the DemonFX makes a lot of counterfeit Darkglass pedals, but this is the first one I have seen of an Aguilar product.

Anybody seen one of these in the wild. So... does it suck?

And what a rock tone it is. I play a J-bass with the neck pickup soloed, probably in your ballpark.
Do you run that setting with AGS on or off @pisces_bass ? I used AGS on for years, but lately have been using another drive in front of the THDI and running AGS off. To me it has a slightly beefier, more pleasant tone.
