Tone problems in the upper register.

I have a problem with the upper register on my fretless 4 string Fame Baphomet. The lower register has a nice clear sound but notes higher up onthe fretboard kind of just thump and die if that makes sense. The sound is dampened and has very little sustain. I've adjusted the truss rod and the height of the strings but that didn't really help. Any advice?

First check that the neck is perfectly flat...you don´t want relief in a fretless, don´t set the action to high or the intonation will go out a lot( same on any bass or guitar)..Have you checked the the pu isn´t too close to the strings when you play high up the neck? If it is on all the strings then it is probably a pu height issue or EQ.

Where did you get that idea? A fretless Ebass requires relief just the same way a double bass does. Except in a DB they call it "scoop". The string vibrates in an arc regardless of whether the instrument is fretted or not - that's what relief is for.

Your pups may well be the main culprit, the description sounds like pups dont have the treble content you want. If you cant add more treble via raising pole peices, then replacing them would prob be your best choice.
