Hi there!

I'm setting up a small pedalboard for practice/jams with a group.
I'm using a compressor (Walrus Mira) into an octave pedal (OC-2 type) into an amp (Ampeg Micro CL stack).

I find my sound a little "lifeless" and lacking body, I'm looking for a pedal (ideally just one) to help me shape my tone a little bit and add some color, warmth and even some light grit/distorsion, but I'm struggling a bit figuring out which "kind" of pedal I should be looking into.

Would a preamp be a good option here? Or should I be looking into boosters or drive pedals?

I don't mind getting something used but I would like to avoid "unobtanium" pedals if possible. Open to any recommendations - thanks!

The JPTR jive is a great pedal. It’s the only ‘bit of hair’ pedal I’ve tried that actually delivers, and actually sounds good with fingerstyle without being farty. It can be very subtle and just add a tasty fat grunt to your sound (and it can also dirty up a lot).

It also does a fantastic job after octavers to enhance the sound and bring it out a bit- I find this very useful because sometimes you want that pure OC2 dubby subsonic sound, but when you want more of a synth bass with a little presence the Jive transforms it.


And it’s super cheap and super small


It doesn’t have any EQ, but it adds that ‘certain something’ and it’s basically always on for me (and I’m not a metal guy or anything). Even set rather clean, it adds a certain magic to the mids that I love.. basstheworld did a good video of it, but it’s really one worth trying. If you find you need a little EQ too, this one is again super cheap and small

All else remaining equal (right and left hand technique/pickups/setup/knob settings on bass), the tone shaping of the Broughton Studio One, and overall warmth of the Noble DI are worth a try.

I’ve got one of those. It provides a nice warm and wooly early 70s type of sound if that’s your thing. I personally love it.

Another vote for the Sushibox Slampeg. It gives you some tone shaping, plus you can dial in some tube drive to flavor. That may make a big difference for you. Otherwise, maybe your amp, cab, or pickups aren’t doing it for you.

I have and like the Silver Peg as well. As the OP wanted warmth, I recommended the Red Crimson. They work well together, too, with the Red Crimson boosting the low end and the Silver Peg taking care of the mids.

Perhaps a tube compressor where the tube does the work? The o.g. MarkBass Compressore is highly regarded as being very warm, musical, and flexible. You can get subtle compression with tube color. Anything but lifeless for sure. I love mine.

Xotic Bass BB - goes from clean to full on overdrive, and everything in between. Sounds killer, and has a great "feel" in how it responds to playing: Bass BB v1.5 – Xotic California

As much as I love pedals (that varies day to day, though), I'm in the camp "these are not the pedals you're looking for". "Lifeless and lacking body" would make me look at my bass and amp setups, assuming I'm happy with my technique.
Also: try playing without your pedals. How does it make you feel?

Maybe a Spark would fit the bill.

As much as I love my Spark for guitar, IMH experience it just doesn't work with bass. YMMV, but ive had problems with the Spark's ability to handle low frequencies. Ive actually looked into replacing/upgrading the speakers.. What I would recommend is a Melvin Lee Davis Bass Preamp + DI (NBP-5) - NUX Small, clean, inexpensive and understated but extremely versatile and powerful with Cab IRs and a host of other features you may find useful. All the above mentioned items are viable options.
