Note : I do not mean this to be a "praise cheap gear" thread. Just a "something awesome happened" thread.
At my gig Saturday we had a split bill with another band. We were opening act (blues, jazz, some steely Dan and Fagan tunes, and some originals). Though some memebers shared some backline we played our own bass rigs.
I play a squier vmp5 into a LMIII and ampeg 112HE. After our set I got a few compliments on my playing (though admittedly I took them more as compliments on covering my mistakes), but the other bass player specifically complimented my tone. I've been switching gear (specifically stings) lately and it was good to hear from someone else that it's coming together as a whole.
Then I saw his rig. He had (i think) and gk mb500 and one of their 410 cabs, a few effects, and he had two laklands on stage! He sounded great too and their band was very tight/well rehearsed. But I definitely had to chuckle that those basses each cost close to the same as my whole setup (assuming he bought new).
