The off natural color really looks like some kind of ASH. The white could be the ALDER proported in the SPECS. Anyone play one of these yet and what has been thier experiences? The neck specs are to my liking and I am really looking for workable P/J 4 banger... I think I could work with the selector switch (verses a PAN). I would imagine quility on these would be more close to a Custom Shop verse MIA or CIJ so they have really piqued my interest. Anyone pick up one of these lately and/or played one and have an opinion?
I've got the fretless version and love it. I'm trying to find a fretted version, but I can't imagine it not rocking like the fretless. Subscribed for responses.
The body is stained alder, which makes it darker like ash. Pretty bass...I might be tempted if I didn't already have 3 Ps.
Thanks for clarification on the stained aspect.... I am in similar situation but might consider one of these replacing one each P AND J (what a concept)...though I love both of those instruments it would be replacing...LOL. OT who started the Fender Fretless club? I own two of these and would like to join. Thanks again for your comments.
Same here. I probably love my 2004 American Series Precision and SB-2 too much to part with either, and at least one would have to go if I wanted the Tony Franklin. But hey, I've learned to never say never when it comes to GAS -- if I try the TF and it rules, I could probably work something out.
I am also quite interested in the TF Fretted. Too bad the guys at the music stores near me are jerks and wont order one in
I got mine last week. I now have both varieties of the TF: black fretless, and golden amber fretted. The fretted one gets put through the paces this coming Saturday night. I'll try to post pictures after then sometime. It replaced my Geddy as my main live bass after playing it for about 5 minutes in the shop.
Re: a replacement for both a P and a J... I think you could pull it off. There is something special in the TF switching that really makes the J pup sound quite authentic.
Here's one of the shots that I've gotten back so far. This thing cut through quite well. I got lots of comments about how "in front" the bass sounded. I'll post better photos of the bass as they come in.
The amber model is swamp ash, at least based on the photo on Fender.com. Take a look at it--that ain't alder wood. BTW-- How about a review on the bass????
I'd have one of each TF if they made 'em lefty!! TF ROOOLS! Blue Murder with him & John Sykes & Carmen Appice will reunite soon!!!
I'm just grateful they don't make 'em both in natural ash with maple fingerboards... ...I've got too many basses already. Here ya go:http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=354622&highlight=fretless+fender+club
Thanks lpdeluxe! Got registered...now I need to play 'em more (fretlesses...). We played our last two services with a cellist that really made me wish I have my smooth board with me... Hope all had a Merry Chistmas!
Were you using it as PJ, P, or J? Also, who has these in stock right now? Looking for the white one...
Merry Christmas all. I tried the P, J, and PJ configurations throughout the night, and decided that the PJ works best for me in this band. The guit***st has a wall of Mesa, and while the P made it thick, the J made it cut on through. Taking my full rig didn't hurt, either. Amazing around here how many venues only have PA for vocals. I don't think the white one has been released yet. I think I will have one of those, too.
You have a couple of great looking axe's there Thunkinfunder! I've been waiting for Fender to come out with that kind of P, with 70's style maple board for a long time. Fender Japan has that PB70-93 with ash body, and maple board, but I would think this USA model would blow away the CIJ. What did you pay for your fretted Franklin? And where did you find it? And is the Nitro on the neck a little sticky like the American vintage necks? ok...... no more questions..
