Too big a footprint? Stomp XL or just the Stomp?

Hello everyone,
I'm in the process of choosing my pedals for my first board. (I've already ordered a Classic 2 pedaltrain and Pedal Power 3 Plus). I'd decided to get a HX Stomp and this morning realized there is only a $50 price difference between the Stomp and the Stomp XL. For all you Stomp experts, considering the price difference and the footprint, would you get the XL over the Stomp? Would the extra flexibility be worth the bigger footprint?

I have the regular HX Stomp. I added a top-mount Pedalnetics adapter for 2 extra footswitches, without increasing the footprint. But then I also added a Little Robbie Pilot for access to snapshots and the ability to free up my tuner footswitch. After I added a DISO Line Isolater/DI, the footprint is getting pretty close to the XL. But I think I still prefer my setup to the XL, since I rarely gig with it.

If you need more footswitches for live applications, the XL would be pretty efficient & totally worth $50.

I like the extra snapshot the XL brings to the party. That can't be added on later like extra buttons.

If you have the space I’d get the XL. If not you can get an “add on” 2 switch unit thst attaches to the smaller Stomp to expand it to a total of 5 switches for about $60.

That's the option I was planning on. I planned on adding a 2 momentary switch pedal and plugging it into EXP 1/2 (FS4/5) and using that capability. (Rock Stock Pedals has a dual switch auxiliary pedal for $36).

I bought an XL only because I found an amazing deal on one here on TB classifieds. I really like having the extra footswitches and not having to rely on a thir party switching solution. I don't think the footprint is too big - you'd have to be on a TINY stage before it became an issue.

I like modularity.
And I like small footprint and lightweight luggage.
So for bass guitar, I'm just fine with the regular Stomp and its three built-in footswitches. Everything fits nicely in my gigbag.

While I was playing guitar in two bands a few years ago, I added either a small external passive footswitch, or an expression pedal and a small MIDI footswitch. It all still fitted nicely in my gigbag.

But since I have a minor physical handicap that affects my ability of safely balancing on one leg, I'm avoiding any excessive "pedal ballet" anyway…

I am realizing I have successfully countered my first episode of pedal GAS...that 8 is not necessarily better than 3 just because 8 is more

I don’t find the 3 foot switches (or two if you use FS3 for tuner) to be a big limitation on the stomp. For bass anyway. With two switches, you have four sounds per preset — no footswitch, fs1, fs2 and fs1 and Fs2 together.

That should do it for most songs but ymmv. Add a fs4/5 and you are golden. Or a FS/4 split with an expression pedal.

I bought the Stomp XL and I wish I had bought the regular stomp. I don’t utilize it to the full extent, usually just for the modulation effects. I still use tube amps.

I use every button on the XL. A midi footswitch can take the place of the extra buttons, but I also like being able to throw the HX stomp into my gig bag and roll with it by itself.

I like modular and easy transport. I gig a Stomp and find it is more than enough to cover my tribute band and church gigs.

I have the XL. It is too big and has too many switches if you're playing bass in a conventional way IMO. If you use a ton of effects or like turning things on and off mid-song then the XL may be the way to go.

When I bought the XL I envisioned it being an all in one solution - it can absolutely stand on its own - and I did use it this way for quite awhile.

However, I found that certain effects and sound parameters need to be altered in real time depending on the space, gig, etc. I don’t find the menu diving and tweaking on the Stomp fun at all. I’ve since added other pedals before and after the stomp - analogue knobs - quick and simple.

In retrospect, for my usage I would now buy the smaller version and save the space. But the XL is great if you’re using it as your primary pedal. One and done.

The capacitive touch foot-switches can make on the fly editing easier, even if you never toggle the effects on/off. If you had 6 blocks, you can access all of them quickly from the XL switches. Whereas the normal Stomp, you'd need to scroll to get to the 4 blocks not assigned to a switch.

You can however assign multiple effects on/off to a single switch if need be. Example - for the intro to Bad Love - Clapton I use a chorus-delay-reverb setting all done on a single switch.

The command center updates of the Stomp makes the device super flexible and cuts down on tap dancing and/or need for complicated MIDI syncing. Of course, there's still support for that if your setup is more complicated.

Also, re menu diving on the Stomp: I get it that some people are just more averse to this no matter what, but I find the UI/UX of the Stomp really nice and easy. Yes, there's a little learning curve, but that's true of most gear. Once you mess around in there enough, you get the flow and can make changes pretty quickly. Also, the more I've messed around with the Stomp, I've found that I don't need to tweak as much — I found my sounds and settings for the most part.

I use a Stomp and the guitarist in one of my bands uses an XL. I supplement mine with a couple other pedals, his is effectively an all-in-one solution that hits the front of his amp.

I think the Stomp has the superior form factor. He sometimes struggles with hitting multiple buttons by accident whereas I've never had that problem. I don't know if the buttons are closer together on the XL or not, but I suspect the second row of them would drive me insane vs using a stomp with a pedalnetics helauxy duo.

I also have one of these that I use for certain gigs and a lot of rehearsals: PortaStomp V3 - Pedalnetics it's way more than $50 but I think it's the ultimate expression of maximal minimalism lol. The front midi switches open up a lot of options, you can actually plug a helauxy duo into the midi switch, giving you 5 midi switches total and then you can STILL use the EXP1/2 if you wanna go that route. I also love that the front row of buttons is angled.
