I don’t understand this post. I’ve heard a ton of these songs on the radio. Are you talking about extended versions?

Back in the old days when AM radio ruled songs had to be under 4 minutes to get airplay … FM radio operated under a different set of rules

I saw the Thick as a Brick tour

They opened with Thick as a Brick and about 2 hours later they finished that. They played another hour. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

In The Light, and Ten Years Gone. Just two of my Led Zeppelin favorites that never get played on the radio.

I’ve always heard those tracks on radio, FM of course, but that’s the only place those two would get played. Those songs never would have been slated for singles in the first place, but classic rock radio never shys away from Zep material, they’re a staple.

Marshall Tucker Band live version of 24 Hours at a Time with guest fiddler Charlie Daniels. It’s got a killer bass line but IIRC the song runs over thirteen minutes.

Next is a version of Whipping Post I’ve heard a couple times but i don’t know which album it’s from. The first time i heard it I thought it was from Filmore East but as it stretched out Oteal could not contain himself and stepped it up as did the rest of the band. It started as an absolute nail of the FE version but evolved into an extended jam that did the name proud, but here’s the thing that makes it so odd. I was on my way to Knoxville one friday and was running behind so i hit Chatanooga right at afternoon drive time crawl and Whipping Post came on the local station just south of town and ran until i was on 75.
So i guess that even though it was at least a half hour, i heard it for the first time on the radio so it got air play which means it’s not too long for radio.

Alice's Restaurant is the obvious one. But it only gets played on Thanksgiving.

I vote for Boston Foreplay/Long Time. Almost 8 minutes. I don't think I've ever heard Long Time on the radio without Foreplay first.

One of the stations here in my area has a particularly bad edit of Beginnings... just hacked to bits and pieced back together awkwardly.

Just about anything from early Rush, Yes, or any of the multitude of prog rocks acts out there ain't going to make it. That said, WNCX in Cleveland once played 2112 in its entirety back in the 90's...

When I first got into radio back in the mid 80s, a song that was 3:30 was considered long. I can remember getting a single that was over four minutes, and thought "cool, now I can go poop!".

We used to have a station around here that from like midnight to four AM had a show called "Beacon Street" that would play pretty much anything, deep deep cuts, and stuff way off format. I was listening one night about 2am and the guy comes on and says "it's time for a Beacon Street meltdown..." and I heard the big synth sweep of Rush 2112. Guy played the whole side one of the album. I figured his girl was there or he was going to smoke a fatty...

Edit to add: I still work on an AM Country/Bluegrass station. I have a song that is 15 minutes long and I play it all the time. But then, I'm the program director and I'll play what I damn well please!

Monday 4-26-21, Eugene community radio station KRVM will be playing Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” in its entirety. Parts 1 thru 9, 26 minutes, from vinyl! This is a big deal - we had to get the station’s approval. Ha! I’m excited to be involved.

I don’t understand; if someone is inclined to want to hear it, it stands to reason they already own it, and can pop it on anytime. What radio(or whatever resembles it at this point)has had going for it is the element of surprise; you don’t know what’s coming next, or else, if scheduled ahead of time, it’s something you haven’t heard before...a new release, a different version, or a live performance that you haven’t had access to. I wouldn’t mind hearing, if it exists, a high quality recording of a complete concert from ‘75(or ‘77, when I saw them, they did all of Animals, an intermission, then all of WYWH in order, plus an encore of “Money”). That sort of thing was what was great about King Biscuit Flower Hour.
