here's my guide to know if you own to many basses:

if it cost more to restring all of your basses than the price of a bass (hi end of course), you should thin out the herd.

$30 strings vs $1000 bass = 33+ basses,
I'm in good shape, time to start shopping

IME, changing strings gets to be a chore, particularly when it needs to be done on basses that are not currently going out to gigs. Since I tend to be lazy, the result is those basses don't get the new strings they need, and as a result sound less than optimal. Keeping an instrument in gigging trim takes effort! So, my definition of to(o) many is when I'm not keeping up with the strings.
