here's my guide to know if you own to many basses:

if it cost more to restring all of your basses than the price of a bass (hi end of course), you should thin out the herd.

$30 strings vs $1000 bass = 33+ basses,
I'm in good shape, time to start shopping

Very simple. Install flats once. Never change strings again.

They only get a pro setup when first purchased and they are less than perfect. (In my J bass' case, I assembled it from a Fender AVRI '74 Jass bass body and Fender MIA Precision Pro neck, so I know intonation and bridge saddle curvature settings are not optimized.) From that point on I tweak them as necessary.
