I live in an apt and would like to find a good way to practice my bass with iTunes songs using headphones.....some sort of interface that allows me to use my gain on the guitar and also adjust the particular song volume so I can obviously make my own mix. Is there something on the order of a USB with inputs ? volume controls etc ? Any ideas and direction greatly appreciated.....

What is the source of your MP3's? If it's a PC then something like this would work, it's what I use.

I guess you're set if you got the amplug - it's probably the cheapest way to do what you want to do. There are lots of other ways. A lot of combo amps have an aux input and a phones output. Also you could just use a small mixer - there are a number of small ones on the market for $100 or so, and it would have more versatility (say, to run a mic into for live practice or recording). There are some bass preamps, like the Ampeg SCR-DI or the Tech21 Bass Flyrig, that also have this function.
You're right, for sure. I also have an Ampeg BA-108 and BA-210, both of which have controllable Aux inputs and phones outputs. I'd love to have a Tech 21 Flyrig-maybe someday.
Yup. This becomes your sound card so you adjust the MP3 level as normal and adjust your bass level with your preamp or input gain on the Focusrite.

My main issue with the iRig is the software rather than the hardware. The Amplug software is worse than terrible, and I've never been able to get a decent sound out of any of the software amps. IMHO, a hardware solution like the Vox is much better, especially as it lets you use any external source you want for playback.
I bought one of these online for $50 and it works great for practice or stage. You get an AUX in to run music from your phone, iPad or computer through it and mix it with your bass plus 100 or so effects. You also get a great tuner a looper and a drum machine, plus it's small enough to fit in your guitar case or gig bag.
Get a Rumble 25 new for $100 bucks, should have a headphone jack, and input for for MP3 , I have the Big Head, Love it! but its expensive.
Find a used GK MB 200. It has a headphone out and mp3 input. It's what I use at home plus it doubles as my backup head.

Yes, lot of ways to do it.....I like convenient ...lazy too...oh, and cheap..... having a bass head sitting on the coffee table is a little much. I don't really have an amp yet. I'm shopping....
