Top 10 bass FX of all time?

First off, I think it's been noted more than once that playing in tune is not an effect. *laugh*

Here's the actual effects which, although I might be using only a few at a time, are *always* on my board:

Heet Sound eBow
MI Audio G.I. Fuzz
Zvex Mastotron
Boss SYB-5
Electro-Harmonix POG2
Boss PS-3
3Leaf Groove Regulator v1
TC Electronic Nova Modulator
Line 6 Tonecore Echo Park
Line 6 Tonecore Verbzilla

i've been on a buying spree of effects 2 years back. but now i understand what i want and what i needed for my job. i end up with these pedals and sold the rest.

VT Bass Deluxe
MXR BOD
SFX Bass Micro Fuzz
MythFX Triton Modulation Pedal with Reverb
Sonic Research Turbo Tuner
X2 XDS95 Wireless (not sure if counted as effect but always on my board)

i owned a Xotic BB Bass and sold it and regret it, i want one now but its too expensive and i'm looking for a micro size pedal now. might get the SFX Black Dragon to try.

i owned a one of the first batch i guess of GR, sold it and regret it. Proton is on the way now.

my desert island fx would be my VT Bass Deluxe. i can't gig without it, its the meat and potato of my tone.

i've probably gone through at least 40 pedals, and still not managed to nail down many absolute definites...

the pre MOSFET fulltone bassdrive, running at 18v, was the only FX pedal i used for 7 years, but replaced with a BB bass preamp, which I prefer, so that's my one recommendation!

i'd take a maxon PT999 phase tone too. i've never used phasers live, but love noodling about with them at home, and of the 8 or 9 i've tried, this is hands down my favourite

gonna be a lot of pedal board space on my desert island!

My list would be:

Mutron III (The greatest I've plugged into IME, miles better than GR, 00Funk, Qtron...)
Aguilar TLC (I've tried many comps this is the best I've found)
Source Audio BEF (For all non-Mutron envelope stuff)
EHX BMS (For the moogie, dirty, octave, synth filter stuff)

I need to find the right OD, fuzz, octave and tremolo to bump that list to 7.

Do the Wooly Mammoth clones have as much low end? Is it really a simple fuzz circuit?.. Or does ZVex do something really special to get the warmth, low end etc
Wondering about clones vs non clones..
Guess that's another post..

I'd love to take stats from this thread when it's done, see which fx averages the most users, make a list. This is a great thread, helping me immensely.

I'd definitely put my vintage DOD overdrive 250 on the list, it's helped me get sustain with tube amps in the studio, I never take it to clubs though, only recording sessions.. The two others I bought both were terribly useless, so it's irreplaceable

There was a thread a while back where people were adding their effects to a big list. If you had something that wasn't on the list, you were supposed to add it, if it was already there you just added 1 to the number. Can't for the life of me find it though... :hmm:

Glad we could help! Talkbass has been a blessing and a curse for me. Blessing: ton of great information about a ton of great gear. Curse: a ton of great gear that I "need." lol

5sg.

Moog Moogerfooger Lowpass. The great thing about the moog filter is that it is never clean. It's always a tiny bit in overdrive no matter how you set it.
Boss PS5, also for the detune effect, but occasionally I use it for pitch too. DOD FX70 flanger. DBA Fuzzwar. Turbo rat (modded). EHX Doctor Q. EHX Frequency analyzer (ringmodulator), EHX double muff fuzz (modded).

If I had to pick one it would be the Moogerfooger. Between that and an expression pedal it can do wah, overdrive and envelope folower wah. It also sound very different depending on the fat and slow setting.
the Boss Syb5 bass synth gets honorable mention. It isnt going to replace my Moog or Doctor Q but it's got it's own thing, esp with the reverse sweeps and the sub octave though it does sound more hard and synthetic then the others.

This is a combination of what has influenced me and what has landed on my board at some point during my bassist days.

1. Korg Pitchblack
2. Sansamp Bass Driver DI
3. ProCo Rat
4. Boss BF2
5. Boss CEB3
6. 3 Leaf Audio Groove Regulator
7. Boss OC2
8. Line 6 DL4 (the huge green thing of delays)
9. Big Muff Pi
10. Line 6 m9

I am sort of cheating with #10. It is a multiFX but it has successfully knocked numbers 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, & 9 off my board. No the m9's FX elements are not dead on the same as their analog counterparts but they come close enough in the ballpark with such a versatility and rich feature set that I'm a big fan (just not of the Filters and most Distortions).

oh,I love these kind of things, I like to read them or start them every year or so,
I pick it apart, research a ton of the newer, talked about products and then try a few
..these things are definitely in abundance, especially here on TB, I still like 'em..

I get locked into a sound, and stay there for a couple of years..
for a while i was:
Stngray+SVT
I did LMII+Sadowsky metro+UL410 for a while..
then Roscoe+LMII+Aguilar cab+ DOD overdrive 250

and I stay there..locked into that combination of gear/tones.. for a long time, like a phase
..most of the gear i purchased was on reccomendations from TB'ers..

These things help me see what other players have discovered, and it helps me to explore newer products,
the abundance of fx are overwhelming,it gives me a place to start.

i have an old Ibanez UE 300 multi effect that is my go to pedal if i can't have an entire board with me. It has a Tube Screamer, Chorus, and Compressor. All three are from the 9 series. If i could find a way to integrate a fuzz into the enclosure i wouldn't need anything else.

Line 6 Echo Park. Tons of options, small, and great for delay odysseys.

In order of what I have on my board:

1. Echo Park
2. Korg Pitchblack
3. Stereo Memory Man
4. Aguilar TLC
5. ProCo RAT
6. VT Bass Deluxe
7. Fulltone Catalyst
8. Small Clone

That's everything on my board.

Yes! I was about to cry that nobody had said this yet.

In this order, for me at least
1. Moogerfooger LPF
2. Akai Deep Impact
3. Boss OC2
... (bit of a drop down)
4. Lovetone Meatball
5. Moogerfooger Freqbox
... (significant drop down)
6. Soundblox Multiwave Bass Distortion Pro
7. Delay, DD7?
8-10. Expression pedals

Im like the way blankman thinks

1-OC-2
2-Behringer BD121- at this price pont everyone should have one, and in head to head clips some actually preferred it over the BDDI
3-Source Audio Bass Distortion Pro w/exp pedal - great digital distortion with contol over so many parameters it makes my head hurt
4-Boss SYB-5 w/exp pedal - i actually use the behringer but since its a direct clone ill go with the boss
5-Moog MF-101 w/exp pedal- electronica anyone?
6-Stereo Memory Man W/ Hazarai- one of the most versatile digital delays on the market
7-Markbass Compressore
8- DHA USA VT1 EQ Bass- Overdrive, tube preamp, if your not after the Ampeg sound this box is where its at,

and lots and lots of expression pedals, any pedal that allows me to change the sound it produces on the fly with out bending over is invaluable to what I do on bass.
