Top 3 players whose TONE you admire most...

the sound that got me playing bass was a fella called harvey bainbridge,he's a synth player now,but the first in i heard shot down in the night on live 79 by hawkwind i thought thats it...thats the bass sound for me!!...also jj burnell,geezer or lemmy,or the dude out of blue cheer.....oh and chris squire!!
 
I gravitate toward aggressive tones as that is what I use with my band. I like that overdriven kinda sound that is still supportive. The kind that cleans up a bit if you back off. My 3 favorite rock tones are these guys:

Brian Cook from These Arms are Snakes and Russian Circles
Paul D'Amour from Undertow era Tool
Greg Edwards from Failure

For most things I prefer my tone to be incredibly bright almost to the point of being obnoxious - think Chris Squire in "Roundabout".

I also prefer my bass completely, 100% clean - distortion and bass do not mix well for me.
