The Yamaha is great value for money and they make a nice bass. I own the Ibanez. I own four various Sound gear basses actually, so there's my choice. It feels like no other bass. I prefer the tonal options too.

There may be a most popular or best selling or 'your preferred' bass (8.7grillion threads on that), but there is no "Best" anything. Too many variables.
Cost, Tone, Specs, Preference, Need the list never ends
It's like naming a 'Best Car'. For some folks it's some million dollar supercar, for others it's an affordable van to haul the family around.

I don't know enough about my options. It seems the more I know the more I realize I don't know. For example I might be aware of most production instruments but then I find out about a fantastic Luthier that I never knew about before. It happens here all the time and always shocks me about my number of options. I will say though as an American I do measure all other basses against a Fender ( consider American Performer to be the quality benchmark). That just gives me a frame of reference though. Most production companies have a bass I would be seen in public with. Still want a Carl Thompson!

The top 5 bass guitars are the ones I built for myself, using the parts I like best, all tweaked so that the basses complement each other sonically.

Ric 4003... (I know... Daves world of Ric Trashing)
Peavey BQuad, But I'm fond of the American Cirrus.
(Foundations get an honorable mention for being my favorite budget bass)

This is my list of favorites based on what I have actually played/owned, not necessarily what I think is the holy grail. That would be a separate list.

3. Ibanez BTB
4. Ibanez Soundgear
5. Rickenbacker 4003

Although, for reasons I will not elaborate on here, Rickenbacker is simultaneously on my list of best and worst. I have an ongoing love/hate relationship with them.
